May look at your planned route, then Google the states you are going through?

In Pennsylvania it looks like fenders are exempt for Pa vehicles registered as a street rod. Out of state car? YMMV.

    175.208. Body
    (a) Condition of Body - All items on the body shall be in safe operating condition as described in §175.80,
175.110, 175.130, 175.160, 175.190, and 175.220 (relating to inspection procedure) and this subchapter.
    (b) Fenders - A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall have fenders on all wheels which cover the entire
tread width of a tire that comes in contact with the road surface. The tire tread cir***ference coverage shall
be from at least 15 degrees front to at least 75 degrees rear of the vertical centerline at each wheel, measured
from the center of wheel rotation. Vehicles registered as street rods are exempt from the requirements
    regarding fenders.

My understanding is vehicle laws apply as to the state of registration. So if you are in another state your car just needs to meet your states regs. much like operators licences. Is this not so? If not the case I need to rethink some road trips for sure.

I’m just looking to see what states don’t allow open wheel cars so I can eliminate those as an option

I think Oldsvroom means moving to another state, not traveling through.
I don’t have an answer, but maybe SEMA or NSRA has info?

I wouldn't worry to much about a ticket. I've never had a problem with my highboys in the last 50 years. Unless you accidentally lose the drawing and find a new rookie or over zealous ***** you should be fine.

Australia is the only place I know if that has fender laws. I think you’re ok in the USA.

Unless I’m mistaken every state has some sort of fender or “mud flap” legislation or regulation or something of that nature.
Whether they enforce them or not is an entirely different matter.

There are a number of threads and posts on here regarding fender laws, especially in Wisconsin. I just typed "fender laws in Wisconsin" in the search bar because I remembered the discussions that went on. Lots of info.

My Deuce roadster has 55,000 miles on it and has been in 19 different states. The only State I ever had an issue with is Rhode Island. We got pulled over by a "Dirty Harry" wannabe and he read my wife and I the "riot act" over how dangerous we were driving a car with no fenders. At the end of his five minute lecture he told us that because we were from out of state he could not cite us so, we were free to go.

    As I recall, if it wasn't on the original vehicle, it's not required, and so, my 32 Ford was ordered with the "fender delete" option. {sniff}

CA used to have and may still have a fender requirement for cars weighing more than 1500 pounds. Back in the day people used to carry weight slips showing that they were under the 1500 pound maximum in case they got pulled over. Fast forward to today and I've never heard about anyone being stopped for not having fenders but anything is still possible.

    Edit:
No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread. This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from registration, trailers and semitrailers having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds, or any vehicles manufactured and first registered prior to January 1, 1971, having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds.

From what I understand if your car is legal in your home registered state your good to go. I've had my coupe all over Wisc, Ia, Mo, Ok, Ks. ND and SD with no problems ever.

  17. The law here is you must run fenders (mudguards), regardless of the state.

Highway patrol detained me for an hour in Iowa for not having fenders on a T roadster. He finally admitted it was not a crime. First day on the job? However, I get SEMA alerts on bad car legislation and CA is looking to make changes. Specifically for old semi-tractors.

When **** Stritchfield moved to Hawaii he sold his Magee '32 Roadster because of the fender requirement. I've heard that Hawaii has since changed that law and allows fender less cars.

The other problem is if it has to go through any kind of inspection and doesn't p***.

List the States you're considering moving to and hopefully resident HAMBer's can recite their States vehicle code such as 51504bat did for CA. Because CA's VC reads "vehicles first registered before 1971", it speaks to the advantage of registering your Hiboy as a 1932 vs. a newly constructed vehicle. Having said that, most cops don't give old cars a second look, so long as you're not driving like a knucklehead.

That's what I meant. I think they generally leave hot rods alone whether there is a law on the books or not. I've driven all over this country in an old car, and all I ever get from cops is waves and smiles. I haven't had a registration sticker on my Texas 1938 plates in over 10 years because it's ugly. No cop has seemed to notice. It's in the glovebox just in case.

An hour detainment is clearly excessive for being pulled over for a minor vehicle equipment infraction. Cop was clearly flexing his power. Generally speaking, the courts have ruled the police cannot detain you beyond a reasonable amount of time to satisfy the reason for the traffic stop (in this case, about 15 minutes max to gather your ID, registration and proof of insurance) then 1) cut you free, 2) issue a citation, 3) arrest you. You have a right to go about your day. Ask the officer to contact their supervisor. Their sergeant could clear this one over the phone and you shouldn't even have to wait for them to commute to the site.
Remember, if you don't ask to be released they will consider your lengthy stay as 'voluntary.'

It seems like it depends on your age. If you're an old guy, and don't do stupid stuff, they leave you alone. At least it has worked for me so far.

If you are being a **** when you get pulled over for something, the cop might tack on a fender ticket if he remembers his state has a law. If not, don't worry about it. No cops are going to Holsteen you for no fenders.

Even my Wisconsin friends still drive fenderless in their home state.
They have a sticky legal/legislative problem there, but everyone is trying to ignore it.

    Georgia has:
No fender laws (Except commercial vehicles)
    No inspections
No ***le needed for 1962 and older
Emissions testing depends on county of residence
In general it's pretty easy here for any automotive enthusiast
