The script and the vertical lines were originally black. There was a little paint left but polishing took care of that. Is there an easy way to restore the paint or do I need to hire someone with a steady hand and a tiny paint brush?
Don’t skimp on the brush. Buy a couple of sizes. I used Testors model car paint with a little thinner. I do my hub caps
Mask off everything except a rectangle which contains the word "Skyliner". Get some Rustoleum flat black and spray the exposed rectangle. Let it dry overnight and gently use some four 0000 super fine steel wool to buff off everything but the black in the recessed letters of the word "Skyliner". I did mine 35+ years ago and they still look perfect.
I was thinking along those same lines except I was going to wipe the wet paint off using something flat like a cloth wrapped around a piece of wood. I have the pieces from my parts car Victoria to experiment with. Thanks for the idea.
I’ve done the wet paint/ wipe with cloth method and it got a bit messy but after a few tries I got it. Different surfaces will also affect results. If the edges of your feature are not crisp then it has more of a tendency to smear.
You can let the paint dry overnight and then carefully wipe around the edges with a rag damp (not wet) with lacquer thinner instead of using the four 0000 steel wool.
This is exactly how I have done it in the past, I also used this method on my valve covers. I sprayed the valve cover and let it sit overnight, The next day I used a piece of cloth wrapped around my finger, dipped it in lacquer thinner and gently started rubbing the raised part of the valve cover, after a few minutes and using a clean cloth this is the results. HRP
I've used scotch rite instead of steel wool. It tends to leave the edges of the paint sharper since it is flat and stiffer.
I experimented with all the suggestions. Gray scotch brite is too course and dulls the surface. Lacquer thinner was difficult to work with. I used 0000 steel wool to clean up the surface and a pre-paint cleaner. Two days after the paint was applied I used the 0000 steel wool and am satisfied with the results.
I wish the rest of the re***embly was that easy to solve. Trying to get the rear windows to roll up correctly is kicking my ****.
Victoria rear side windows have umpteen adjustment points. Are they manual or electric? If they're like my '55 Merc the windows and regulators are modular ***emblies that bolt to the body. The service manual should have instructions on how to adjust them.
I adjusted the back windows on my 55 Vicky you just about need the service manual to adjust them it took me about 2 days to get mine adjusted right good luck many adjustment points
They are electric. I'll look at the repair manual again, but didn't see anything. I didn't look in the '53 section.
I'd forgotten that the '54 manual supplement only covers the things that are special to the '54. I found the correct pages, but it is still a lot of work.
If you think that it is a lot of work on a closed car, I had to get the power windows working and adjusted on my '54 convertible which was twice as hard!
