Technical TIE ME KANGAROO DOWN SPORT

I want to be clear, I am not a carpenter. Metal is forgiving, wood is more like a wife. One mistake and it will remind you of it for life or until you replace it.

While preparing the oak for staining and clear in my 41 ford PU I decided to sink four rings in the floor to secure loads (golf clubs and a cooler).

A simple idea that covered my body in sweat and wood bits. I first installed them in the bed to make sure nothing would be below them like those wood beams.

I used my router that I have owned since high school to sink them flush in the floor boards.

They are deeper that the wood strip so I had to open the hole all the way through. They are backed by a stainless panel and secured with stainless hardware

The rings are spring loaded so they don’t rattle about when not in use. Made from SS, I will give them a light polish job before installation.

They don’t have a drain hole so they will hold water, I think I will pop a small hole in them under the hinge to slo allow them to drain.

I don’t own a kangaroo but I do own a yeti. It’ll be secured, sport!

 

Don't forget to say "That's not going anywhere" everytime you use them to secure a load.

When tying down kangaroos, the PU needs to be referred to as a "ute". The traditional fastening method is to use an "occy strap" (named for octopi):

Never try to tie down a koala. They ride in the cab.

About the title of this thread.... I had to sing that song in school when I was living down under.....

That's a genuine Aussie upbringing. None of us know the second verse of the national anthem, but we know all the lyrics to Tie Me Kangaroo Down and the correct response to Am I Ever Gunna See Your Face Again?

It was written by an English migrant who returned to England while still a young man. He never lived here again. But he did make a career in Britain out of being a professional Australian. He wrote songs such as this one and invented several myths about Australia that the British believe. To this day, whenever the British dress up as "Australians" the first thing they do is put on a hat with corks dangling fron the brim (that is when they don't dress as convicts.) Rolf Harris ( the song author) invented this to entertain the British. He told them Australians wear hats like this to keep flies away fron their faces. It is all bullshit. No-one wears a hat like that. Although, the myth has become so engrained that you can actually buy hats like that in tacky tourist souvenir shops.
For what it's worth the song author died after being imprisoned as an old man in England for reasons too unsavoury to mention here.

Excellent! Securing load is overlooked way too often. Often based on false logic like "that's so heavy it can't move". The opposite is true, once the vehicle is moving the load will continue to do so if the vehicle stops suddenly - and as a driver you will be right in it's path of travel.

 

Practical wins out over traditional, good call on the stainless hardware, black iron patinas oak in a big way with a bit of time and weather. What traditional beverage might your yeti be filled with?

 

There was a board that my parents bought for me as a 7-8 year old. It made a sound like "whoop- whoop" when bent back and forth. I remember "whooping" that board along to "Tie me kangaroo down Sport" Musta been about 1962? Anyone else remember that?

Ya know, I seem to remember a statement very close to this by you a couple years back. Something about "Not" being a Painter. Uh Hu, me think there's a little bit of a smoke screen here. There's not many men that can pull off what you're doing and not be hiding their true talent's. I do understand not blowing your own horn, but the truth shines through in the end.
