    Mostest Stupidest Question Ever?
Is the 1st Gen 392 considered Small Block or Big Block?

Which way to rotate the Distributor to retard the timing? It is a MSD ready to run Electronic.

Firing order for the 426 and the 392 are the same, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, however the the 426 rotates counter clockwise and the 92 clockwise.

Jack, what direction does the roter turn?
If clockwise then turning distributor clockwise you will retard timing.

    Clockwise.
I turned distributor clockwise, and now sometimes when I start a cold engine, it back fires thru the carbs. 2 500 cfm Edelbrock Performer. Its a driver, not a show car, not a race car.

392 is a 'big block'. Decks are 1/2" taller than the brother 354 and 331. Heads are interchangeable between all 3, just need to add intake manifold spacers when install in 331/354 heads on 392. No one puts 392 heads on the smaller engines. The smaller engine heads are preferable to the 392, even on a 392!!.

I set my timing with a vacuum gauge. Install vacuum gauge on intake manifold, play with idle screws and distributor advance for max vacuum at desired idle speed. Might need to back dist. down a degree or two but this is pretty close to perfect.

  8. I am not trying to hijack this thread but I thought this was relevant at least a little bit to the conversation

This is not my engine I know nothing about it But I wanted to p*** on the information to somebody that might need it. I've had it in my watch list on OfferUp for a few weeks now I have no idea what I would do with a hemi and I know nothing about them or how to identify them (I don't know the difference between a Dodge Chrysler and Desoto But I can tell the difference between a first gen and second gen).
Anyways anybody needs a hemi, the trans and drive shaft I think this is a pretty good price (It claims to run and it's $1,000 bill or best offer) And if it isn't a good deal I apologize for the time wasting.

Chrysler had it first. SBC came along in '55, and STOLE the firing order! So... SBC became same as Chrysler.

The usual question refers to the architecture of the base design and the answer is SMALL block since there are similarities to the A series and LA series The EarlyHemi has NOTHING in common with the B&RB engines.

  12. It has some short block aspects in common with the Poly, but that is about it . . .
