I'm looking for a little help on the steering box placement on my 1940 chevy hotrod pickup. The box I took off was an old saginaw that was wider and mounted on a 2x2 box tube welded to frame. It was worn out and a lot of play in steering. I bought a reversed Corvair box and it's a bit different dimensions to say the least. I will be buying new steering column, drag link, pitman arm. I plan to have a mounting plate made up and welded to top of frame rail. The problem is as seen in photos, clearance to wishbones from pitman arm and angle of hole/steering column through firewall. Will 2 DD u-joints work to connect from column with a short section of Double D shaft? And can I heat a pitman arm and bend to clear wishbones? I have the lake style header off and I don't see any clearance IMG_20230806_122837019.jpg IMG_20230806_122854913.jpg issues with it. Any advise is appreciated, Thank You.

I’d look for a smaller Vega box for that setup.
The one you picked looks awfully wide.
Sorry I don’t have any measurements for comparison.

You can heat and bend a forged pitman arm, but not a cast one. What kind do you have?

  4. 2 joints would work so long as you avoid binding. IIRC they are good to 30-35 degrees of angle.

    Corvair box is awfully " light duty" for a '40 ... Screenshot_2023-08-07-06-39-29.png

The pitman arm I bought is forged.

The truck is light weight with a new straight axle 4" drop, fenderless with a 283 sbc engine. I was hoping this box would be strong enough, the plan is to have a local weld shop fab a mounting bracket and weld to frame. I just need to get everything mocked up for alignment first. Thank you for the replies.

    " hoping " its strong enough ??? :(

  10. A corvair should weigh around 2500 pounds.
a complete 40 Chevy truck should be around 3500
I guess engine placement between a corvair and truck would be a consideration.
A bobber truck would probably be ok
Doubt it will be hauling loads and fire wood or coal

I got some more mock up done with the steering box. Someone before me kinda butchered a few things on this truck, but I'm working on correcting what I can. Plan is to move the hole in firewall over a little to better align and probably have a mount made to raise the box up about 1 1/2", a short section of double D shaft with 2 u-joints connecting to steering column. Does anyone have any suggestions with this method? Thank you. IMG_20230808_161057082.jpg IMG_20230808_160731344.jpg IMG_20230808_160941602.jpg IMG_20230808_160947911.jpg

    88DA91EA-0D9D-425C-89D3-55D015DAC7CC.jpeg I’m confused.
The pitman arm location on that box is beside the frame instead of the engine.
Are you running your drag link parallel and outside the frame …

This is a traditional side steer with reversed corvair box, not cross steer.

Can you use a mount plate that moves the box out the where the u joint is straight?

  15. At least make a wedge mount and tilt the Worm gear up so it's pointed towards the hole in the floor.
