There is a propensity for the 49-51 Ford hoods to fly up when driving. As a safety feature some Roders add a second latch or safety pin to the hood. At the NSRA meet last week I looked at 6-7 Fords of this vintage to see how this issue was addressed. Unfortunately none of them had an added safety pin. So, I'm hoping that some of you who have done this can post some pictures or at least explain how you did this. I am in the middle of a 50 Ford two door build. Thanks in advance.

Back in the day, lo-tech was to go with a chain and padlock. Brass padlocks are very traditional.

Ok, mines a 50 Merc, but same sort of deal. House front door safety chain.
Hood opens enough to slide your hand in and guide the flat piece of the chain through to release it.

Hmmm. I've had a number of "shoebox" Fords on and off since 1957 and have never experienced any hood problems. The original "safety latch" seems to work just fine. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that this could be caused by a mis-fitted hood or defective latch. The latching system on my current '51 (which I have had for 38 years) seems to work just fine. The hood itself does get heavier each year lately.
