Helping a friend out. He's got a 64 C10 with a 230 and a M22 4 speed with 3.73 rear gears. He wants to put a 5 speed in it. What 5 speed trans unit are we looking for that has the same input shaft and bell housing pattern as the Muncie? He said he has access to a T5 unit out of a Ford(?). Thanks in advance for your help.
You'll need an early T5 if the Muncie pattern is a must. The Ford T5s use the metric bolt pattern, so no go there. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/transmission-t5-tech-links.169265/
i have a 66 c10 daily with a lo-po crate 350, T-5 and 3.73 rear gear. frankly, with the terrible aero on these trucks, i don't think the 230 will have the power to push it in overdrive. on mine, it will cruise in OD, but is a dog and doesn't get any better mileage in OD than 4th. YMMV.
I ran a T5 out of an S10 in my 63 for a while with the original 230. No racer but it did alright even though the sixer was pretty worn out. I dropped a 290 hp GM crate 350 in it with a T5 out of a Camaro. Same input shaft as a Muncie. It was a direct bolt in with pretty generic parts. I used the tail shaft off the old S10 tranny. I’ve been running that for several years now with no issues. If I keep my foot out of it I can coax 16 - 17 mpg out of it. It’s a fun driver that gets a lot of attention.
Just looked at my original thread of when I did this work. It's been ten years now. Holy crap where did the time go?
What's he going to do with the M22? I would think people would line up to trade a T5 for it. Probably even install it for him.
