Cool stories! I’m really likin’ Junji’s 348 Impala with 4.56 gears. I suspect it didn’t see a lot of highway driving. In the late 60s I had a 57 Chev with a 292 (283 +.060”) and 4.56 gears. I hated driving it at anything above 50 mph for more than a couple miles. But it was very quick in an impromptu street race!

I was doing stupid 15 year old juvenile delinquent shit
a fun exciting era of a misspent youth
'wouldn't change it if I could.
the movie was fun but so far removed from my reality it was a meer fantasy story of privilege and idealism
I have a copy and have watched it dozens of times, it would be fun to see on the big screen again

  4. Have my tix for the 27th. I watch it at home but it's not the same.

  5. I was Class Of '61 so at the time frame of the movie, I was heavy into cruising with my buddies (But not into racing yet. My racing involvement became an every-weekend pastime a few years later.) At the time the movie was released, I was raising a family, scraping out a merger living, in a fixer-upper, money pit, with no garage or shop, and no money for luxuries like movies. I don't actually recall when or where I eventually saw the movie, my guess is it was on a VHS rental a few years later.
It brought back a lot of happy memories of some great, carefree times in my life....... and a couple of not-so-happy memories but I tend to focus on the good ones.

I don't regret having spent some hard-earned bucks for a really great big screen for my home. Its sharp detail is so much superior to the murky movie theaters there's no comparison. And with my age-related hearing issues, the ability to have captions is another vote for the big screen.

One of the first dates my current wife and I had, was to see this in'73. I had a '65 Mustang convert and was possibly driving too fast and was pulled over by "an officer". He asked where I was going in such a hurry? I told him "just going to see AG at the theater" He said "well, this is it!" and handed me a ticket. True story.
Still watch it a lot. Have had a similar TBird to the Susan S one for many years now.

Not to hijack this thread but I have watched the “Cars” series over and over and over and over again when the grandsons were young. If you really pay attention there is a tremendous amount of detail in the dialogue, background graphics and even automotive history. Probably most people wouldn’t even notice unless you are a real car guy/gear head or watched several times. A example is the mountains in the background in some of the scenes is cars buried hood down as in Cadillac Ranch or Doc Hudson saying “Turn right to go left” there are many others.

  13. I was too young to see it when it was in theaters but my brother should have taken me anyway.
in around '78-79, I was 13 0r 14, I got to watch it when it was released for TV. The next day, my two toned green 1930 Monogram Model A 5-window coupe became the beginnings of the following image. I tried to paint it an Aztec gold but failed. Ha Ha!

The chopped coupe sat in a box until revel released the '32 3-window coupe. Caddy engine is lifted from a '64 Coupe de Ville... 8-pot log manifold is from my older brother's parts boxes. Hey, they weren't usin' em!

In 1962 I was but one year old and in any case I grew up in Israel, where we had no automotive culture in the American, Aussie or even British way. AG did get to the big screen in 73 in Israel but was swept aside like everything else because of the 73 war, so I never saw it when it was new, and for the life of me cannot remember when or where I did watch it eventually. By then I was into cars fully so while I did enjoy it did not influence me like many others here.

As for 2023, I realise this is somewhat melancholy, but when thinking about it and in what direction the world has moved since 73 – and certainly 62 – there will always be a bitter taste when watching it again.

    But maybe that’s just me.

  17. So true. I think that's what makes this place a bit special.
They did add the little post-history tags for each character which has the sobering fact that Toad was killed in Vietnam. So that war was pretty real in folks hearts and minds at that time. The world changed a lot at that time.

It got worse between 1962 and 1973 but man the way things are in 2023 I'd even settle for 1992...
