Well, I don’t think I’m gonna go to the car show on Friday! BUMMER! It wouldn’t be any fun anyway with it being that hot! Man! It was in the 70s all this last two weeks!!!
33 Update: Well, I’ve been driving it for a couple weeks on and off to work in and around town, in 90 to 104 degree weather. Couple of things: It runs about 190 on hot days 160 to 170 on cooler days but the higher the RPMs quicker gets warm on the highway. 190 is the highest so far It cruises about 65-70 no problem straight down the road no pulling or vibration. However, the tranny has a few issues. The 2nd to 3rd shift Syncro catches once in a while, if the RPMs are too high, or trying to climb a hill or what not. And the output shaft has some play up and down it kind of clunks a little bit when I put it in reverse. Also, it makes a weird clunk once in a while when I go up driveway, at weird angle in reverse. So I bought a full kit a new clutch fork and shaft just in case it’s catching on the pressure plate or something because there’s a lot of side play. Also found a new old reproduction stock Syncro full assembly. And heavy duty detent springs and balls to get that proper “clicking” between gears I think I can pull it through the floor board and tilt the engine, forward enough to pull it out to clear to crossmember. I really don’t want to pull the front-end and engine back out. I sure do get a lot of thumbs up, and it cruises great around town as long as I shift it real easy…
I think I will drive it to work tomorrow Before I start Ripping her apart!! Should not be to bad. Glad I made the metal floor removable like the old wood one!
Made it back-and-forth again today! So, as soon as I get this tranny rebuilt. it should be good to go!! And reliable
Gonna be a while! I need to save some money for a new 2nd gear, and new main gear. Could probably still use them, but since it’s apart, might as well, do it right I found the problem, there was 1/8 of end play that can’t be explained, so I made a Spacer to go between the snap ring and the speedometer gear. Boy! Van pelts online info sure helps alot!!!
Well… I ordered my transmission parts from Mr. Van Pelt himself! What a cool knowledgeable guy! I ordered an input shaft/3rd gear and and a new second gear! He says that they’re made in Argentina and he’s been using them for 10 years now and they’re great or I could get a good used stuff but I just went ahead and bought new!
Got my VP gears! Big difference! Way more meaty teef! I think this tranny is going to shift like gravy now!!!
My pops found a bunch more pictures of the 33 and some of our other cars! Me and my brother in a couple! (Can you tell that my family and friends like 33s and 34s?)
I nabbed a couple pics for the "Hangin' Those Rear Tires" thread. I'll tag you. It's so fortunate that you have those pics and you've brought the car back.
Got a little progress done today. Will be finishing this until I get back from Europe though at the end of September too much stuff going on. But at least the gears and everything are in it, and it seems to be fine.
Welp! I think it is all good to go! Took it apart 3 times, to Make sure everything is correct! lubed all the gears, and bushings Rotated by hand several time's hand, shifted it, broke in the rings as best I can in Hand. Sealed everything, and painted! Just need to Put it back in when we get home from Europe!
Congratulations 33...fantastic journey you've taken us on...looks really sharp...great job on the turnaround times on the shakedown...your motivation is beyond admirable...best thing is you still have things to share with us...have a great trip and I'll bet you'll be a bit giddy to get back and do some cruisin...looking at the family photos it's no surprise that you got the old car bug way early...
Thanks! I love sharing with you guys because you guys of course, are the only people that get it!!! I miss the old days when my dad had a bunch of friends that came over and uncles and stuff. It’s just not like that anymore. I’m sad about that, but at least I got this forum to share with.
SHHHHHShush….. I was supposed to be cleaning the bathrooms while Grace is out with her friend eating dinner. I got the transmission in and the bathrooms cleaned, and the dogs walked and she still out eating with her friend !!! Lol! I did all of this in these pictures, AND the bathrooms, in an hour and a half!!! (I can be motivated when I want to!!!) I didn’t like the aftermarket sleeve, and bearing so I use the other one in the old sleeve that bearing only has 200 miles on it anyway but it’s way beefier, so is the sleeve!!! maybe it’s for a truck?
Always seems strange to me to be on the HAMB while in another country. Not sure why, but just does. That is especially the case when I have been on here in a third world country that barely even has electricity (at least reliable electricity). I have been on it in probably 10 countries or so and strangely enough, it kinda seems like a little piece of home no matter where I am in the world. Have fun in Ireland. That is one place I have never been but would like to go. My grandmother was a Riley and her folks came over from Ireland around the turn of the twentieth century. So, I am as much Irish as anything at least that I know.
Have fun, I know some locals over there who will only drink Guinness on tap over there, "doesn't taste the same elsewhere!" Enjoy your time
Few from Scotland… London Tomorrow All this cool… but I am Homesick And miss The 33 and the Bronco. At least I can Spy on them when I have Wi-Fi!
Last Night in London! Fun…. But Homesick!!! Just when we figured out the “tube” Here’s a few pics to wrap it up! And a car that I came across that I can’t figure out what it is but it’s cool!
