alright guys, heres the deal. i have too many projects (dont we all) and there is one i just need to get out of my garage to free up some space for more important workings. the car is in bare metal with filler in some areas. i need a cheap primer that is easy to spray in a basic garage paint booth (plastic walls, wet the floor etc). id like to use a lacquer primer for ease of application and drying time, but i have heard that i might as well leave my car in bare metal and drive it around. BUT i dont think this project is worth an epoxy series like DP. so what should i do? i know this may sound like a short cheap way out, but thats what i need. ive put tons of work into this car but its just not in my heart anymore and it needs to go. enlighten me! -jake
A freind of mine owns a paint company called SPI.His paints and primerd are second to none, and cost half price of the big name stuff. He even has a black epoxy,PM me and Ill give you the number and web addy.Hope that helps..... EVIL
The trouble with lacquer primer is it has a talc powder type content that will obsorb moisture and eventually rust will bleed through. In other words it is designed to let the paint soak in to adhere better. The DP is good, but I have had it stain from just sitting around with stuff getting on it like oil, and even dust sitting on it seems to dull the DP primer. I've seen guys use flat black rust-oleum., but it takes a long time to dry. There is some "off brand" epoxy primers that I'm sure are just as good as DP and cost a lot less. Roy
It also depends on how long you are planning to keep car outdoors. A cheap solution would be to use PCL Etch primer, if bodywork is complete and cover car with a tarp. I would inspect car each month to see if any rust might have started in case. If body work is not complete, PCL also carries affordable polyurathane primer(grey, white and black) for almost 1/2 the cost of the DP Series Primer.
