Hot Rods Blowing this thing apart

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by nochop, Feb 28, 2022.

  1. I’m glad to see that the fenders are back in play. I was worried when they didn’t go for media blasting. Coming along nicely.

I’m going to work the fenders out a little then send them out along with a few bits and the frame out for media blast. Then off to my body/paint guy.

More small work that needs to be addressed. Restored the cage nuts to get the rear fenders hung. Replaced the 5/16 24 with 5/16 weld nuts. IMG_6012.jpeg IMG_6016.jpeg IMG_6015.jpeg IMG_6014.jpeg IMG_6018.jpeg IMG_6013.jpeg

  12. Nice to see the new cage nuts are 5/16-18, the original fine thread ones drive me nuts, no pun intended.

  13. I don't mind the fine thread, as long as they are all fine thread for the same components(fender, saddles, whatever) and they are all cage nuts, not nut and bolt.

More repairs, this time passenger front fender. I’ll tidy up the welds later after more fitting IMG_6061.jpeg IMG_6062.jpeg IMG_6064.jpeg IMG_6059.jpeg

They were the only fine thread fasteners on the body other than the #12 and #10 interior fasteners

Love everything about this build. I hope all goes well with the paint shop.
I do have a comment on the motor mounts cantilevered from the inside of the frame. Are they welded to the boxing plate or to the inside of the frame with the boxing plate fitted around them?
I know there are thousands of cars out there with similar mounts but I would consider putting a bolt-in tube crossmember between them. I bought a car years back that had the same type of mounts. I hit a rough patch in the road at about 40 mph and the welds broke allowing the engine to drop til the damper hit the tie rod. I got it home safely but I was surprised that the nice looking welds had broken. The engine was a 327 Chevy, much lighter than our Olds Rockets. I never really considered the G forces encountered by the mounts/chassis when the car hits a pothole until I saw the damage. I bent up a piece of tubing and made a bolt in crossmember after straightening and re-welding the frame mounts. Just passing on a “lesson learned”.
I hope the visible parts of your frame are straighter than mine were. Lots of bodywork just getting the chassis ready to paint.
It looks great, you have to be pleased with your progress.

IMG_5827.jpeg I’ll hope for the best on the the motor mounts. I lifted and rotated the frame during the welding to insure proper penetration all around

Man I don’t know how I missed so many updates but your process photos are priceless, you’ve given me some pretty clear cut, straight forward solution. Gonna be a great hot rod!

Thanks Tim. Work may seem slow, but there are 3 guys working part time on about 5 different cars. I know the guys and I feel good about knowing were my car is.
