I need some strong magnets to hold a panel flush while I tack weld it. Who sells some really potent magnets ina retail type store? Like a Home Depot or Lowe's etc.?

  2. Don't know if they'll work for you but cow magnets can be had at almost any farm supply outlet.

You can find them on ebay. I've got some 1/2" square ones that work great.

Most hard drives have some pretty aggresive magnets to move the heads. Got any dead ones around to tear apart?

  9. Old speakers are aways good for harvesting magnets from too.

Root, I know you said retail store, but if you're not in a super hurry, McMaster Carr sells rare earth magnets of all sorts.

Edmund-scientific, mcmaster-carr. Depending on how heavy your panels are, I got a handful of some strong ones if you need em.

  13. Harbor Freight sells "welding" magnets.

Shaped like an arrowhead, they work well in holding things square for tacking etc.
Two different sizes, don't cost a whole lot.**

Like Big A says, old speakers have some ferocious magnets.
Even in sizes down to 6" x 9".

**Strike an arc - stick or TIG - and watch the electric "flame" lean to the side when it's in the magnetic field.
    Weird stuff....

  15. The old speaker magnets I have are so stong .You have to slide them to the edge of the panel to get them off. You just can't pull them off.I have one antenna magnet with the stud still on it that I use for welding to get a good ground.

car battery+ thick copper wire wrapped around some rebar = electro magnet. Dunno if it would work or not but could be fun to play with.

Got a Michael's or Hobby Lobby nearby? They should have a selection of magents to look at. Really not sure how "strong" the magnets you'll find in a retail shop would be though.

I googled "really strong magnets" and came up with this one: http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm

Find an old non-operating microwave. Take the magnetron out. Take the magnetron apart. It will have 2 round magnets, very strong. Ive only got about 20 of 'em around here.

Screw welding, just use the magnets. Your car will be attracting vintage tin for miles. Just park in front of a wrecking yard and let the cars come to you.

    Taken from United Nuclear's website:

"THESE ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT TOYS AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS! KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN! - THESE CAN EASILY CRUSH FINGERS! WE CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY THESE POWERFUL MAGNETS.

If you really need unbelievably powerful magnets, here they are.
Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in accelerators, levitation devices, magnetic beam amplifiers, s**** iron separators, etc.
Beware - you must think ahead when moving these magnets.
If carrying one into another room, carefully plan the route you will be taking. Computers & monitors will be affected in an entire room. Loose metallic objects and other magnets may become airborne and fly considerable distances - and at great speed - to attach themselves to this magnet. If you get caught in between the two, you can get injured.
Two of these magnets close together can create an almost unbelievable magnetic field that can be very dangerous. Of all the unique items we offer for sale, we consider these items the most dangerous of all. Our normal packing & shipping personnel refuse to package these magnets - our engineers have to do it. This is no joke and we cannot stress it strongly enough - that you must be extremely careful - and know what you're doing with these magnets.
Take Note: Two Super magnets can very easily get out of control and break fingers and even your arm if opposing poles fly at each other. If working with multiple Supermagnets, always handle one magnet at a time, secure it, then proceed to the next magnet. "

  22. My part***press.com flyer came today; has some magnets advertised.

    Happy hunting...

They don't have to support the hood or anything just a small 3.5"x 35" strip of 18 gauge metal that I am using to peak my hood. I just wanna keep the **** weld area all lined up.

We bought some of their magnets and you can't pull them apart by hand. Also we got around 3 ft. from a computer moniter and wiped it out.
    Hope this helps.:D

  26. Watch out for some of those rare earth magnets. As said previously pinching or crushing injuries can happen. I bought some 1" wedge magnets for a windmill project. They're mean! They'll make the colors blossom on a tv from 8 ft away. Just for fun I dropped one about 5 ft away from our new refrigerator. It fell about 18" from chest high and then flew parallel to the floor into the fridge knocking a nice little dent into it. Wife wasn't happy about that.

An alternative would be the HF panel clamps, those things work great.

I'll second the hard drive magnet idea, those ****ers are strong.

I'll second this. Most powerful magnets I've ever played with, much stronger than speaker magnets.

I'll offer a handy, cheap tip. My garage is attached to the house so I sometimes track in things. On my mat out side the door where I brush off my feet, I embeded some of these hard drive magnets in it to catch the metal from grinding and nibbling. Those little moon shaped slivers thrown off by the air nibbler are the worst. These magnets do a good job of getting them out of my soles before I go in the house.

I purchased some that look like a arrow head at TSC and they are for welding, used them to hold a rollpan and a few other things. You can buy them in different sizes, I think the most expensive was like $12.00 or something but they work great for me...................
