George was the master of all engines (won with Cadillac, Chevy, and Ford), and along with fellow racer Sneaky Pete Robinson, were the leaders in lightweight components. RIP Mr. Montgomery.

  6. RIP George, my A/GS partner and I always dreamed of racing "Ohio". We never made it back east or to the U.S. Nationals. He was the "man". It's sad that the list of "legends lost" seems to continue to grow at an accellerated pace.
    God's speed George.

One of the very first plastic scale models I ever built was George Montgomery's '33 Willys coupe.

I remember I was a little disappointed that the tires were molded in plastic. Had to get out my box of spare parts for some "real" rubber tires.

But I learned at an early age, the importance of...
    Ohio George Montgomery !!!

    R.I.P. George

  9. George is remembered fondly on Ford FE websites. He is a kind of a hero that many wish to imitate.

May he rest in peace. I remember reading every thing I saw on him back in the Gasser war days when he was a big draw at races around the country. Check out the new issue of Hot Rod off the bookmobile and see what they had to say about a race he ran at. Then get it out of the mail box and read it after my grandmother bought me a subscription that she kept up from 1959 until 1975.

I just watched the video that @49ratfink posted of him beating Stone woods & Cook.

Made me cheer and tear at the same time.

Bummer. Met him a couple times. 90 is a good run but still, bummer.

I saw him hand Don Garlits a die cast car to sign. Don got all pissy and asked him if this was for him or if he was going to sell it on eBay.

George said it was for himself but I thought to myself "Don, is your signature so dear that you wouldn't sign for someone like Ohio George either way"?

He was so important to the craft that I would have signed 10 for him.

    At about 2:00m

"The acceleration sensation is great, there's no question. They lift the front end pretty well. Not just jerking up like some cars, but this one pretty well carries them for quite a ways."

George and his Willys began a lifelong interest in gassers for me! He was always at the top, regardless of what engine he used, and against the odds also, but still winning!
    RIP George!

Being a West Coast guy, I always rooted for C&O, SWC and Big John but as I got older I realized how great he was. His attention to detail and weight savings was legendary, as was his driving.
I met him once at one of the Gasser Gathering events at IRP or maybe St. Louis. I sat and talked to him, asked if he was going to update his old Willys and run it. He said absolutely not, I had to be crazy to drive that thing back then! It was a handful. Funny, it always seemed to be one of the more consistent cars of the period. I guess that’s how good a driver he was.
He was truly surprised that folks like me would travel across the country to shake his hand and tell him how he affected us young hot rodders across the country. He said he was just having fun.
R.I.P. Ohio George, you will always be remembered.

Photo my dad took of Ohio George's Willys at the World Series of Drag Racing in Cordova Illinois in 1960.

First model kit I ever bought was the 67 Mustang Malco Gasser. I would have been 11 years old. Also got to see him at Lions in the twin turbo Revell Mustang in 71-72?

RIP Ohio George, one of the all time greats.
