:D:pWords used an there meaning too who wrote it ,then the meaning to who read it;; There is often a gap!!
Plus, my age ,an how hotrod active I was in the 1950s,forms perspective, that would be cool,if I could drag some back in time, too see first hand, would help{ also be fun !!:p:D}.
"Things looked the way they WORKED......= It was not a style or a trend at first "
Much later, those who fail to understand it> give it names other then the engineering teams.
I'll start with front>,so called tall an skinny = Straight front axles were designed to use tires of the day.;)
Front end controlo_O,Is often screwed up by those who failed to understand the engineering:(,of Caster/Camber/Kingpin Inclination* and scrub* *<rim width an offset* <Yes all those are"Must work togethers an not be hack in to some BS,about "This was done to look good"=No,it was too work right !!!!
Things most often screwed up on straight axle front ends= tires over 5 inch tread width {don't work well*,also become too heavy for shock control, add to that, that wider adds to bad scrub. How tall or short the rim/tire is,dose mess with scrub n tow forces.
Hope some get this ,did I leave out stuff"Ya" we go on about how high or low,but that is right along the same why!! Look it all up,an learn,if needed.

Now for the rear tires ** Tires got wider with time*, every hotrod guy* ,was looking for speed and knew* The wider the tread, the better the bite*= Looked for best bite he could get for $.
Flathead V8 for most of early day,did not have available* tires much over 4 in. wide tread. By the end of WW2,tire width started growing,n rims too,, with the new Overhead Valve V8s,by the mid 1950s=we had a few tires as big as 6 inch. By 60,7in. and it kept growing to {what we call fat ,by mid 60 an on.}.
So look around, at those who put flathead V8 width rear tire on a OHV V8 powered rod,,=Do you really think any old hotrod guy would do anything that stupid?? And try to use BS,about " It's the look"
In the end,to day, adding a fat tire for good bite to a hot Flathead V8 power=makes good scents;; But adding a skinny flathead v8 type tire to Overhead Valve V8 power :cool: = NOT COOL
    Stop doing copycat trendy crap.
    On my #82 trip around the sun,in a few days. :p 4thjulyMiamiSprings2018.jpg

Amazing how, with only a wheel/tire swap, you can change the whole attitude of a car... why not keep a couple or three different sets around. Change 'em depending on your mood!

I have a couple sets, the general public like the fatties better, I like the skinnys more, but will rock either depending how I feel. If the fatties were pie cut cheaters on real mag wheels, it'd be no contest.

  18. I like big ol steam roller tires. But I generally do not run them.

Since my beginnings my go to has been 9:00x15 and 5.50 or 6.00 by 15. So not tall and skinny and not wide tires either. Just bigs and littles.

I do not have a pic (I have not even owned a high boy in probably 30 years or so) but this example by @Blues4U is pretty close.

I took a stock 40 wheel and drilled the rivets out using the forty center I then used the hoop off a sixties f-100 and transplanted the hoop on the forty center. I only gained an inch but what the hell I can say it isn’t stock but it appears to be.

  23. Too wide, too short

Looks like a good size for a full bodied car! But not a hot rod

  24. That is @mctim64 s car, usually has tall skinnys on the back

  26. I enjoyed your comment.

I think that the HAMB is much more about the artistic aspects of old cars than the technical aspects.

  27. This is my favorite, out of what's been posted so far. It'd probably still work for me with a bigger front tire/wheel. There's a relationship to be considered between the fronts and rears.

    I don't even know if that's a Model A and/or a 32. Same with the wheels.
