Back in the 60's my high school car was a '40 Chev coupe gasser, and I had the whole interior done in black diamond pattern. So when I built my '39 Chev coupe and decided to try upholstery work for the first time I also wanted to do it in black diamond pattern everywhere. I made door patterns of thin cardboard, then traced them on my door panels, and cut them out. Did the same old chrome upholstery screws the old coupe had, instead of hidden fasteners most use today.

What a timely and inspirational thread! The "door panels" in my coupester are long over due an upgrade, this has given me some ideas to work with.

 

Pretty basic interior in the ol' Rock Chip Special. I made aluminum panels and the upholstery shop covered them. No visible screws.

I don't need fancy, just need functionable. The next guy can get as fancy as he chooses.

The most simple is to paint whatever the OEM gave you.

The really simple: Particle board screwed into place, on the painted door frame.
The more complex: Glue carpet or marine vinyl over the particle board and screw it on.

 

I was trying to work out what door panels to put into my project (sedan drag-strip version of my avatar). I saw HRP's photo on some other thread, and figured the ally bead rolled ones were exactly what I wanted. Saved the photo to my "to do" list. Then I had to buy a bead roller. And side guides. Have resisted the temptation to build a stand for it, motorise it or buy other dies (tipping die... must resist temptation). Found someone locally who sells the ally sheet I need. Practiced on some scrap... need to practice some more before tackling the full size door panels. Some beads look awesome, some look like they were done by a hungover one-armed blind man.

I remember a time in the early 60s when it was popular around my hometown to just cover the door panels in carpet material. I never cared for that.

 

We sis that to the doors, walls, ceiling back during the van craze. HRP

This is the first interior I ever attempted. Masonite (hardboard) for the flat panels and ABS Shower Board for the curved panels. Covered in White pleated material.

My 40 Ford Coupe is currently getting the same treatment.
