Searching for a tailgate license plate ***embly for my '56 Country Sedan. It consists of a chrome bracket and painted extension that holds the license plate and light.
Sorry Rustvelle, I should have included my address: tsanborn@pacbell.net. I'm happy to swap any two of these kids for the part. I'll need to re-chrome the base, is it too pitted?
Hello again and thanks so much for calling, you really made my day. I just wanted to let you know that I haven't received your email yet with an address where I can send payment. Not bugging you, just wanted you to know in case you did send it and it went astray. My email address is a .net and often people mistakenly use .com. While we're at it, my mailing address is: Tom Sanborn, 1233 Mission Ridge Rd, Santa Barbara CA 93103. I'll get payment off to you as soon as I have your address. Best wishes, Tom Sanborn
Hmm. I sent it shortly after we talked. It's Darren Thayer, 8834 Davies Rd. Dillsboro IN 47018. Email is lthayer@seidata.com Beautiful wagon you have there!
Thanks Darren, it's my daily driver (or will be again when I get the license plate holder installed). I love taking it to a restaurant with valets. I ask them if they know how to drive a 3 on the tree and they always say yes. It's an awful thing to do to a transmission, but it's kind of fun to watch them look for "drive". They usual suggest at this point to leave it parked just where it is. I'll get the funds off to you today. I'd love to know more about your wagon if you get a chance. I don't suppose you have a good plater in or around Dillsboro? Pot metal is awful to work with but I'll need to get that base re-chromed before installing. California has chased out almost all of the platers here so I'll need to find someone out of state. OK, follow up. Payment is in the mail! Depending on your comfort level, it would be great if you could get the item in the mail this week. It would give me a head start in finding a chrome guy that works with pot metal. No worries if you'd like to wait until you have receipt of the funds.
I sent several parts to (Red's Parts Attic) in Texas. Some were pot metal, they did an outstanding job on all of them, reasonable price and quick turnaround. Also there is Advanced Plating in Tennessee, they do top notch show quality chroming but VERY pricey. My wagon was pretty much a basket case, very rusty and crusty, took 5 1/2 years to complete. Original engine and trans were gone. Now has 331 Stroker from Blueprint with AOD trans, Vintage Air, Dakota Digital gauges, and a lot more stuff I spent money on LOL! Too late to get sent out today almost 6pm here but I'll send out tomorrow and send you a tracking number
Hi Tom. I am your "neighbor" in Santa Paula, CA. You don't need to send your part for chrome plating outside of California as there is still at least one show quality plater left in Los Angeles that I have used for at least 20 years and as recently as a few months ago. Call Metal Finishing Marketers, Inc. located in East L.A. Their phone # is (323) 780-0270. Ask for the manager Sergio Herrera and tell him that Alan Freeman (the lawyer) referred you. They are reasonable and they do very fine work. They are quick and never lost any of my parts. You can mail him your part for an estimate. Good luck. Alan
Alan- Thanks so much for your recommendation! They're definitely swimming against the current in CA. We belong to Checkered Flag 200 (part of the Petersen Museum) and look forward to their monthly open houses at the car storage facility off Hallock Dr. in Santa Paula. Hope we can cross paths there sometime.
Thanks Darren, greatly appreciated! Our wagon is still running its original Y block with that weird tea pot looking 4 barrel. I did run a new wire harness and added discs on the front with a duo brake booster as well as Vintage Air. The upholstery is that cl***ic embossed cowboy theme but getting pretty tired on the front bench. SMS in Oregon still has the original material but it's a 3 year wait to get them to make new seat covers and door panels. I should be coming to the top of their pile soon.
3 year wait!!! Wow! I sent the tracking number to you this morning via "Conversation", did you get it?
I did, thanks! You are one trusting guy! I just realized your wagon is a two door. They look so much better than 4 doors! Did you add power windows? I added them for the front windows but I used switches that connect to the old crank handles. I'm attaching a shot of the '57 Studebaker with the "rib" riding shotgun and our Brittany between us. Not sure why we were sporting roundells that day, must have been a rally. 289 bored to 310 with supercharger and a column 3 speed w/od. Added power steering, discs and power windows. Great highway car, it's the one we drove back to Indy a few years ago. Pride of Indiana!
Sharp looking Studebaker! Yes I did add the Nu-Relics power windows using crank handles. Also drop spindles and power disc up front and a backup camera.
We're lucky to have someone like Dusty over at Nu-Relica. So, where do you view the backup camera. On to more important stuff. The license bracket arrived yesterday! Thank you so much! When I saw the shoe box, I told Barbara that she had a package. Today, she pointed out that it was for me. Just what I had pictured, I can always use a new pair of high heals. I'll dis***emble and send the chrome bracket out to be re-plated. I hate to even ask but did you receive my letter with payment? You know how these California guys are. I greatly appreciate your trust in a complete stranger to send it on before receiving payment! Is there anything I can do for you?
Here's where I view the backup camera in the new stereo in the console. Only the face of the original radio is there I cut the back off to make room for Vintage Air but it does light up with dash light. Oh and your payment didn't arrive yet but I think pkgs take priority over mail.
I should have sent payment as priority. If it doesn't turn up tomorrow, I'll send it again. Here's the bracket ready to send to the plater. I had already painted the "pope's nose" looking thing that sticks out from the tailgate but it is a little too wide to fit into the bracket. Yours fits so I'll repaint it. Love how you did the interior. I'm sticking with the bench seats and the original cowboy themed upholstery (once SMS gets off their ***es). I've converted all the radio in my cars to contemporary guts with bluetooth etc. Did you go with the shallow glove box from Vintage Air? It's tempting to convert to a floor shifter but for the time being, I'll keep driving it like it was delivered from the factory with the 3 on the tree with o/d.
I saw an email preview of my mail today and your envelope is coming today. Vintage Air sent me a glovebox that I think was for a Ford truck, not even close to fitting. I got another one from someplace, it was close but I still didn't like the fit so I made one out of black cowlboard. It fits better than the ones I bought! Have a 6x9 dual voice coil speaker in the dash and Kicker component speakers in the rear side panels and an 8" powered Kicker sub under the back seat. The backup camera is just a license plate bracket with an adjustable camera built into it from Amazon, works great and I think it was under $50. It came with a viewing screen but I just have it hooked up to the radio. Lokar shifter on the AOD trans., Snowden bucket seats. Wife bought a sewing machine and we watched youtube videos on how to do custom interiors, I built the console, and she s***ched up all the interior in some real nice soft leather. I cut, bent, and polished aluminum stock for the accents in side panels. I even have A/C vent in rear of console for back seat p***engers.
Thanks for trusting me in the first place. That's an amazing build you have there! I made the decision to keep our '56 looking stock with a bit of "wolf in sheep's clothing" that makes it fun to drive. Every time I fill up with gas (with special thanks to Gov. Gruesome) someone will come over and tell me that their mom use to drive that exact same car. I'm particularly fond of the embossed cowboy themed upholstery. I wish SMS would move our order along, we're heading for our 3 year anniversary of placing the order.
