Projects Coupster vs. Roadster differences???

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Nos1partstore, Dec 18, 2018.

  1. Can anyone tell me the measurements?
As I have understood, deck-lids are interchangeable, so that panel must be different - but by how much?...

I don't like the way mine turned out at certain angles when I look at it so I moved onto a different project for now. I know I didn't like the stock sport coupe body I started with. One day I'll narrow the doors and lengthen the quarters or just buy a roadster body and a set of 32 rails.

Don't stop now, I think it looks good. Put some Blitz Black or some color and I think looks great.

Enough coupes have been converted to coupsters that I've saved back the parts to put one or two of them back together. It takes a metal 30/31 top, coupe or sedan doors, possibly a closed car cowl and maybe even a tulip panel. I like to find 30/31 sport coupe quarters because I can go ahead and build a coupe or to fix a coupe that the rear quarters were cut to make it into a pickup.

I believe in using as much of what you have as you can. Started with a '30 Coupe body, no firewall, sub rails, deck lid or inner rear fenders. Cut the roof off at the belt line. Made tapered windshield posts with a channel in them. Windshield frame is out of 1/2" square tubing, strips of 18 gauge and some 3/16" strap to fit in the channels and bolt behind the dash. Had to tilt the windshield posts back slightly so the rear line would appear straight with the front edge of the door, otherwise they would have looked like an obelisk stuck on top of the cowl.

Cut the tulip panel loose and moved it forward so the back edge of the p***enger compartment ends roughly above the front of the fender lip like a roadster, about 6/7". There will be a wedge shaped offset in the quarter beltline so the top of the door and quarter caps will have a smooth line.

A view of the extended tulip panel. The cut out in the center of the vertical is for a 3rd brake light I ******ed from a 90's Chrysler. Rather than narrow the doors, when I made the caps I folded a 3/4" radius bend on the inside edge then used the bead roller to drop it and give the impression of a narrower top. It will be body color to the drop and interior color after the drop. The bottom edge has a slight curve to it to follow the motif of the dash. There is an offset piece spot welded to the backside of cap to leave room to tuck in the top of the door upholstery.

Still need to finish rolling the dash and cap interface into each other.

This has all been covered, maybe, but here's a photo of a '29 roadster door with a '29 coupe door. I would have saved a lot of brainstorming, if i had seen a photo like this before shopping.
Btw, i'm building an un-chopped sport coupe.
I should probably start a thread...

Thank-you! The easy part is done. Now I have to do the hard part, finishing everything.

  11. I designed a takeoff on the B400. I was collecting parts about 20 years ago then moved on. An "A-200" since it is two doors and a coupe. Would use a sliding rag top kit

I like most of the views of mine except the side. Looks like like a tractor or something to me. LOL. Door is too wide. I have a couple other builds going on I'll get back at this one day.
