    Hey guys,

    I’m thinking of putting a new headliner and carpet in my mercury. What’s y’all thoughts on the level of talent this takes? Should I do it myself? Should I leave it to a professional?

    let me know

    I'm ***uming the Merc's are like the Ford's and the rear gl*** has to come out to properly install the headliner. This is one of the reasons I've haven't even thought about doing mine.
    Carpet and scuff plates are next on my list. Looks to be straight forward from what I can tell.

    I replaced my carpet earlier this year. It's wasn't hard. I don't have scuff plates or rear seat back in yet. The front laid in and the front sunning getting ready.

    I just talked to a guy yesterday about a headliner in my '54. He's retired and does it on the side. $950 includes install, material, recovering visors and package tray. I'm going for it! The fact that I've never done it, you need a couple of guys to do it and I know I'd never get all the wrinkles out makes it a no brainer for me.
    BTW, I called a couple of pro shops in the area and they averaged $2200 just for the headliner!

    I had help from a friend that had installed headliners in the past, I'm sure a pro could hve done a better job but it turn out pretty good, you may be able to install the headliner with the windshield in place, IF the rubber is still pliable, if not it's gotta come out, same for the rear gl***.

    We also did the carpet, there was no preformed carpet available so I just purchased a roll and we made it work, I thing it tuned out great. HRP

    I had the perforated stock one replace in my 56 because I just never liked them. The PO had installed a carpet kit and they also leave me wanting better and had it done the same time the headliner. Glad I did…

    In order to install the wide trim across the top of the back window of the Victoria and Skyliner the headliner has to be pulled back.. For that reason I had the rear window installed before I had the headline installed. 4 doors and sedans I don't know about.

    I did both. It's more tedious than talent. Lots of patience, and you'll get it right. My '57 Ford was done before gl*** was installed..much easier, and on my sedan, the headliner goes under the rubber back gl*** seal anyway. Not so on the front, but it's a lot better when you can clamp the headliner to that windshield flange, with t******* after it's attached to the front header. Be careful when pulling the bows out....there is a specific order where they go, so identify them as they are pulled. Fords are color-coded on the ends.. carpet was yardage for best color selection.
    Check my album... there are pics of both being done

    Carpet shown above is the "loose-back" variety. That's the only way you'll get it to conform to the floorboards without visible seams. It is a glue-down to the 3/8 foil backed jute. That type carpet has a bigger selection of colors, something I was really picky about.
    There ARE seams, btw, the carpet is carefully cut where necessary and ****ed together, and as I mentioned, glued-down, not unlike they'd do for household carpet.
