Ok, here's the deal. About 3 months ago some lady pulls up to the shop and asks us if we know anyone who would want to buy a 1960 Chevy. Not overly excited, due to the usual stories on what a perfect original it is, we weren't too excited. You know the drill. " They know someone with a classic old car that has rediculously low miles, blah, blah, blah!" So she gives us the number of the ladies power of attorney. So I call him right away, leave a message search for the mystery car in the secrect parking garage. No luck! Shit! Thats typical. So three months go by, I have placed this mystery machine in the back of my head. The phone rings today, and a gentleman saying he is the power of attorney for so and so, with the 1960 chevy. The supposed car that has 36,000 miles, original paint, original interior. He asks if I was still interested in the car. "Sure, I'll take a look" Go to check out the "Garage kept" car. Well, as it turns out. The car actually has 51,000 miles on it, she is the original owner, it has a perfect interior, even clear plastic on the seats. It indeed has been garaged its entire life. Engine bay is spotless. No leaks under the car, all seals are unweathered. Trunk is perfect with the original spare. It will need the right front fender repaired or replaced, and the right rear quarter has some very minor damage from turning too closely to another vehicle. It needs 2 pieces of trim. Otherwise all of the trim is perfect and unmarred. The car is a bel-air 4dr with a 283 paint is infact very close to perfect. being a light green bottom and a white roof. Now! The guy is open to an offer, but he has an idea what it is worth, because he talked to a collecter car dealer. "He had a rough figure of 7000.00 in his head" What do you think I should offer him?
i could see 7000 if it was a 60 impala 2dr. But a 60 bel air 4dr with damage....no more than 4500 IMOP.
Why didn't the collector car dealer buy it ? I'll tell you why - because the collector car dealer is just a pump pimp for the attorney. Not a scam - but hell - like appraisals, they can be anything. If it needs paint/repairs anywhere what usually happens is you end up doing twice as much as you wanted to, with twice the money spent on repairs. You lost me at 4 door, because you just lost 90% of your resale market. Think about it - a cherry no work needed on ANYTHING 60 Chevy 4 door would be hard pressed to bring 7K ever. Heck - I'ld offert he guy 2 grand to start. Trust me - 4 doors just don't bring that type of money. But like body holes and opinions everybody has one or more. Paint/repairs on a 4 door anything and that car better be cheaper than cheap. Cob
Sounds like a cool car, but 7 seems high to me. I'd offer 5 if you really want it, less if you're if'y on it.
Yeah I figured that the damage would run me about 400 to 500 to fix all of it. Not looking to get it to just flip. Just don't want to get raped. It would be for the wife.
If this will help you out, I just looked up 60 Chevy Impala 4 door up on the collector car review web site and heres the numbers. # 1 $ 8075 Show car / never driven # 2 $ 5825 Show quality but driven - presentable as is - no work needed # 3 $ 3825 Driver - presentable but may have some road rash and no visible wear but no dents orr rust # 4 $ 1900 Needs work - may drive but repairs are needed with paint/dents/ interior and some mechainical work required # 5 $ 625 Parts car - all areas require refurbishing So there you go - and I would not offer the guy more than 2 grand to start. The car sounds like a weak 3 in my opinion and then take a look at the resale value. Man it's a week car to start unless you just plan to buy it and drive the hell out it and not care about getting your money back down the road. Good Luck, Cob
#1 rule in any negotiation- Make the lowest offer you can, without cracking a smile or laughing. Can you get in the car and fire it up RIGHT NOW and drive it? If not , even $2K might be high, 'specially for a more-door.
Yeah car runs and drives perfectly. Thanks for the input. I'm not so good at putting a price on the newer cars.
4 door trim is on ebay all the time and isn't that expensive, so I wouldn't worry about that. Those fenders rot out pretty bad and are a 1 year only piece... and no one repops them. I don't think you can even get patches for them
I have some patches here for the front fenders, someone made them at one time. I'd worry more about the hood, those get rot in them too.
"# 5 $ 625 Parts car - all areas require refurbishing " You said it's a 4dr, which means it is a parts car for a 2dr HT somewhere out there....
Hell, I can offer a turd salad sandwich in trade without even so much as blinking. $2,000 sounds about the right range to me too considering overall condition. Like corncobcoupe said, you had me glued to the edge of my seat until I heard 4-door...
