Okay, I'm getting ready to cut the ***** (for lack of a better term :D) and I need to know something about the rear window. The placement is really high.

I know you guys who have done this and posted pics seem to have some kind of offset cutting that you do on the rear to compensate for this problem....

Can someone please explain to me (with images or drwings too since I'm a visual learner) exactly how you go about chopping these rear windows?

The roofline, doors, pillars, etc. all makes perfect sense to me and I can envision what I need to go to do there... but this rear window is really farking me up.

If someone would be able to help that would be awesome!

    Thanks!!!

How big a chop? I went really big on mine, 1.5 inches.

I thought the same thing, rear window a bit to high when compared to the bottom of the door gl*** opeining. I decided to take make my cut below the rear window leaving it unchopped. I made the cut right at the rear brace below the window. You have a few inches there to lower the window. That also required moving the whole brace, jamb to jamb, down with the window. I removed the whole brace from the cab during the chop, lowered the lid and welded the brace back in last.

If your going big inch chop and cutting the rear window you could still do something similar. Lower the bottom of the window a couple inches. I don't think I would move the top section of window, also welded to a cross brace, when viewed from back it may look a little top heavy with so much top above it. Then remove the remaining inches from the middle.

Here is what my mild chop looks like with the full size rear window in place.

Cut the rear window out plus about 1" around the opening. After you chop the top determine how large you want the rear window. chop the rear window
then cut the necessary metal above and/or below the opening. Fit the chopped rear window in the opening and weld it up. If you post clear view of the back of the cab I can photoshop it for you and you can see the result before you cut it.

    Nice pickup!

    I'm 5' 8" and my lady is 5' 2"... so I want a big chop. I'm thinking 6" or so.

I see what you're saying about the lines, brace, etc. and how to do it though. I think I've got it sorted out.

    Thanks!!!

Yeah, thats kinda what I was thinking. Why not just cut the whole thing out before the chop and then section it, then regraft it in?

Good advice for sure! I think that's the way to go. That and the preceeding advice of moving the brace down below it then.

No problem cutting the window out first and putting it in last. Many are done that way. Let us know how it turns out.

I'm gonna be chopping mine soon and am gonna be cutting the window out, chopping and be putting the window back in...I'm also gonna try to keep the door window openings the same size as the rear window....By looking at that pic of bdrake's truck, the rear window looks about 3" in height shorter than the windows in the doors....Haven't measured anything yet but if i chop the roof 5", the rear window is gonna be chopped 2" to keep them the same.....I don't want a mail slot

    Hey,

When it comes to choppin rear light openings remember.......
mail slot dimentioned openings look kool static-wise, but ****
donkey ****s to see outa in the real world. Before ya actually
let the opening in, sit in the truck, with the seat in place and
see if it's gonna work for ya. Even if your under 6' tall ya may
wanna raise that opening up a couple inches.

I'll definitely do that. I plan on doing kind of a write up/step by step thing. Plan on getting LOTS of pictures and descriptions.

Here's links to mine in progress. I may have the window back in this weekend if I get off my ***, but you can see how i laid out my cut lines. I'm doing it just as Bill and Abone described. I cut the roof 5 inches but will only cut the window about 3. I think I'll leave it in the stock location as far as the top edge. More chop in the top than the window will lower the bottom edge about 2 inches and I hope put it closer to even with the bottom of the side windows.
