I got to thinking (always dangerous) ... it's very common to put a SBC in damn near anything. And I've seen a lot of HEMIs goin into Fords and Chevs, even Caddy motors, and Olds motors too ... but does anyone know or has anyone seen a Ford Flathead stuck in a Chevy?
Am I crazy for even thinking about it? Is there a gas leak I don't know about somewhere around here? Someone slap some sense into me or prove me sane... please.

nothing drives me bonkers more than an SBC in anything but a Chevy(or Chevy related car). Flathead in a Chevy, go for it, they are the baddest looking motors after all.

I've got a 289 that I was toying with putting in a '54 Chevy that I was looking at. Front-mounted dist and a lighter engine.

  4. Now that WOULD be sacreligious!

Any pics of a fltahead in a Chevy or any other non-ford application? It sounds good in theory, but has it been done?

  7. They're cool lookin', but unless it was a really light car, why? They are expensive as hell and don't make much power.

Wow - showing my lack of edukashun here - I was under the impression they were very powerful. Shows what I know.

... looks kinda tiny in that big ol' engine bay. Thanks for the pic.

In Al Drake's "Street Was Fun in '51", he makes mention of a flathead powered '37 Chevy in the Portland area when he was a teenager in the early '50s.

A flat motor in a 34 Chevy would be cool.

  13. The new HRM(or PHR?) has a small pic of an early Chevelle claiming to have 392 Chrysler in it.
Of course, the hood's closed so I dunno about that one.

Not sacriligeous, but it would be stupid.

There's a '55 Chevy around these parts with a big block Ford in it, the guy has big block Chevy valve covers on it, it's cool.

I'm all over that.......I've been toying with the idea of a flathead in my '33 5w Chevy coupe for 3 reasons:

    1. I have an extra flathead
    2. They sound better and look badder than any Chevy engine
    3. It flies in the face of all the over-done SBC-in-a-Ford cars out there......(don't want to offend anyone, it's a good motor but way overdone)

BUT....as much as I love flatmotors, RichardD is right, they just don't produce a lot of power unless you throw a lot of money at them and add a blower. I have over 4grand into mine....and will be lucky to hit 175hp....

  18. Thanks for that - that was real funny!

A flattie is a lot of things - hot, heavy, thirsty, expensive, and come with all sorts of freebies like cracks and leaks. But not power. Or at least not cheap power. And I LOVE 'em!

If you want an arcane power unit under the bonnet of your '50, why not an inline? A late 235 will bolt in, sound great, and still be prone to all sorts of maladies, many of them normally the exclusive domain of the animal kingdom. Or so some will tell you. Use less fuel than a flattie anyway.

I have one here but don't think the shipping will be worthwile...

I have been toying with the idea of a 375hp stock looking 318 for my 53. Cause I have one of each, and my spare 350 needs goin through.

But no way would a f-word ever get in my chevy. I'd rather have a wore out 235 with splits.

Yeah, I guess it didn't work out so well, too heavy and under-powered. (it's liquid cooled for God's sake....) But I thought you guys would get a laugh out of it.

I've dreamed of flatheads in '57 Chevys for years. The ultimate revenge IMHO.

GMC 270 or 302 is very close to a bolt in swap, is more unique, makes a LOT of power and torque, won't break or boil given the roughest treatment, and won't cost as much. And you won't have to constantly explain ...

I remember seeing, in the early '50s, a '29 Chev 3W with a flattie in it. Has a cut-down '35-36 Ford truck grille, and it's still around (although I don't know what it has for an engine now). I've seen it at P-Town in the last few years.

I also recall seeing a '49 Chevy with a built flattie in a magazine back in the day. Of course this was before the SBC had been introduced.

  30. Somewhere I have an old like 1970-ish drag magazine, or maybe a custom magazine, with a feature on a mid-60's Corvette roadster drag car - flip nose, psychadelic fade-job candy blue stripes all over pearl white paint, big slicks sticking out the back, and a tunnel ram Ford 427 motor in it.

As for your car, why not? You'll at least slow old Henry spinning in his grave by a few RPM's. I can't add much else that hasn't already been said, there's lots of more powerful and cheaper options right out of the box, but probably nothing else that would have the sheer mess-with-people factor.

Just don't use those gay-ass phony flathead valve cover things on an SBC, different tin valve covers are one thing, those are just queer as hell.
