    Hello,

When my neighbor bought his first car in the fall of 1959, he wanted a wide open, windows down hardtop sedan. It had to be large enough to carry his friends for a night of cruising around, plus it would also be his daily driver to school and work. He saw my brother’s latest purchase, a new 58 Impala and loved the hardtop look.

But, he saved some, but it was not enough for a full size Chevrolet hard top sedan like the Impala. He looked at several hardtop Fords and Pontiac sedans and they, too were beyond his reach. He did not want to make monthly payments and had the cash to plunk down on his new car. But, the hardtop was his first choice.

He realized that the funky little sedan on the Chevy dealer’s lot was more in his price range. The Corvair was new, but the 2 door version was a little cramped in the back. So, he looked at the 4 door model. He liked the 4 door model, but without the center pole between the 4 doors. No hardtop version was in the cards for the new Corvair design at this time.

We sat around and threw out ideas of what to do. He wanted a new car, but was limited in funds. So, if he did buy the 4 door Corvair, he wanted to make it a hardtop without a center pole. He had the skills and his older friends were also good mechanical teens, too. He did have access to the high school Auto Shop and Metal Shop for all of the tools and equipment. It would be his project for weekly grades and at the same time, still have a nice looking custom car to boot.

The problem was constant daily use for school and for his afterschool job. No car, no job and he definitely did not want to take the bus to school. So, those ideas turned to dreams.

He had seen some lowered custom cars at the local shows and knew he had to have one on a lowered rake. The center pole removal would make his Corvair 4 door a custom hardtop. But for some reason, with a rough sketch, the hardtop looked too tall. So he threw in an idea of a slightly chopped top to lower the height of the roofline.

It would have taken some time and daily work in the high school cl***es. But, he did need his car for daily usage, which led to a roadblock for his grand scheme.

Then he saw a full size Chevy Impala 4 door hardtop and promptly started to save every penny to get to that goal.

He would not have to do anything if he could get the stock version of the 4 door Impala hardtop. YRMV

I wanted to give a special thanks to @Tow Truck Tom for his kind words last week. I'd been at a local car show trying to sell my stiff and wasn't able to reply at the time. This old process set is for you Tom!

The pic of that '58 remind's me of a local car called Daddy's Thing, owned by Frank Marshall BITD. Now owned by Ted Beach.

...I always wondered how those vintage photographers got those racers to have the slanted going forward look...they must have used their cellphone and a convex mirror...:p

Somehow I think I'm wrong...:D...but I've tried to replicate it in Photoshop to no avail...
This reflection in a fender shot at this weeks cruise night sorta captured it though...

    Happy Friday All...

@Stogy alot of old cameras had focal plane shutters. They were opaque cloth shutters that had different height (or adjustable height) openings across the width of the film. The shutter moved from top to bottom of the film, the narrower opening exposing any area of the film for a shorter time, and a wider opening for a longer one even with the shutter moving at the same speed all the time. So if your camera is held still, and a car is going by when you press the shutter release, the top of the film (which is where the bottom of the image is) is exposed first, then down to the bottom of the film. So if the car travels one foot in the time it takes the shutter to expose the film and the image of the wheels takes up 1/2 the height of the film, then the tops of the wheels will look like they are slanted 6 inches ahead of the bottoms.
