So I have the Rjays swinging pedal set in my car that uses a 60’s Chevy truck master cylinder and slave for the clutch. I went to bleed it today and the brakes feel great but the clutch pedal is an absolute bear to push. It feels twice as hard than my other car with mechanical linkage. I did switch the guts of the master side to side so the right parts are with the clutch/brake sides. Any one that has this setup are you experiencing the same thing or should I be looking to try a different slave or master cyl? Maybe one is defective? Thanks for any info, Joe
The hard pedal is usually caused by a mismatch between the slave bore and the master cylinder bore. I've done a couple cars with R-Jays swing pedals and the pedal ratio is good. What are you using for a clutch slave? If I'm using a black Wilwood pull slave with a 7/8th bore I sleeve the clutch side of the master cylinder to 3/4. If I'm using one of my T5 slaves which is a 1 inch push I sleeve the Master to 7/8th. I've redone several of the truck master cylinders using a machined bronze sleeve with a Wilwood master cylinder rebuilt kit for the guts.
So I have been doing some digging online and found that even though the master has 1.125 bore you can buy a slave cyl with either 1” or 1.0625” bore from rock auto. I checked my part numbers and lo and behold I bought the 1” , I guess without even knowing they made 2 different ones. The 1.0625 is on order I’ll update this with the results.
When I put my car together I put a diaphragm Schieffer clutch in it and didn't like the pedal effort at all. I ended up getting a stock chevy diaphragm pressure plate and like it a whole bunch better. I am using the same m/c-slave cyl. set up that you have.
Im also using a diaphragm setup, I hope I don’t have to change it out at this point. Do you know if you have the 1” or 1.0625” bore slave cyl by chance?
I don't and I just looked at it and there are no stampings on it. It looks like it might be the bigger one judging from the od of it. I may have bought this one from Dorman, but I sure don't remember.
I,m running a 60s Chevy pickup master cylinder. My brake and clutch were both really hard to operate. Had the brake side sleeved down to 15/16 and the clutch to 7/8. So much easier to operate now. Wife says the clutch is easier to use than her modern fwd crock.
Just an update to this, I changed out the 1” to the 1 1/16” slave and it is a night and day difference. I could barely get the clutch pedal to depress with the 1” slave. The 1 1/6” version feels mores like mechanical linkage, not too soft.
