Technical Question on installing a 32 Ford gastank

    I purchased a new Tanks Inc. tank (stock style), since my car had a tank in the trunk that I did not want to use. It won't slide in the back under the body so my question is; "does the body typically need to be lifted off the frame slightly and then drop it back down once the tank is bolted in place?" It looks like it would conform to the body once it was in place but maybe mine is just too tight. Not sure! This is my first 32 and just not sure what the process should be. It's an original steel 32, not aftermarket.

  2. Yeah, your going to have to raise the back of the body, that means you will have to loose most of the body bolts. HRP

    I have put in about 8 1932 Ford gas tanks and never had to raise the body to get them in or out. With that said, if yours will not fit you will have to raise the body, and maybe shim it up more to clear the tank when it is in place. Could be your frame is bent up a little or the repo tank is a little different shape than the stock one.

    Strange, I've built a few 32's of various body styles, used lots of Tank's product's and to my memory never had the raise the body to clear the tank? Most of the time the problem has been to large a gap. What's the story on your frame, stock, aftermarket, horns put back on? So many variables.

    It depends on fuel outlet on top of tank ,
    Stock style 32 tank & sender will go in with out lifting body ,
    Then there ones that have fuel pump in tank & some with bulky outlets body needs to raise about
    ""1 inch "" to clear rear pan , then lower . Some need modifications to floor pan to clear fittings, ( in tank & Non )
    I've had to use Aviation/ Aerospace fittings to avoid cutting on floor pan, Pricey

    Thanks for all the responses; much appreciated. I have a stock body but floors were replaced prior to me purchasing the car. It's an aftermarket SoCal frame. It has the correct webbing between body and frame so I will loosen the body bolts and see if it fits once in place. If not I will need to set body slightly higher. I like a tight fit but was hoping it would slide right in without lifting. It's likely more to do with aftermarket rear panels and floor being replaced.

  8. Remember the single bolt for the tank on the passenger is loose with a bolt and castle nut to allow for frame flex. I don't remember having to lift the body to get the tank in.

    with no pictures, guessing a bit, - this is the most likely area to be causing the problem.

    That bolt should go through a spring on top of the tank. It allows for frame flex and keeps the tank tight to the frame. There is also webbing between the tank and the frame on both sides to prevent squeaks.
