Looks like a nut breaker / nut splitter, looks like it's missing the chisel end that rides on the ball end of the threaded driver. EDIT: NOPE, nut splitter has heavy threaded driver.
I believe you are correct...I have a modern version...a twist on an adjustable wrench with limitations in strength over standard wrenches or adjustables in my opinion.
Chisel and Punch Holder like 302GMC said. It's for areas you cannot hold the chisel correctly or just not to smash your hand.
All my chisels have 6 “sides” the angle on the end of the tool doesn’t look as broad as the angle needed to secure a 6 sided piece. It looks like a 45 degree angle the tool has. But what the heck do I know? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Also, I notice what looks to a “nub” protruding from the end of the adjustable bolt. I’m guessing it to locate it in to whatever it holds?
That is a great use for it as well and you may very well be correct... It has an angled head it seems as well so designed as such to get fingers away from the surface...

So Johnny, GM seems to have taken the chisel holder and redirected it's original purpose. That may also be the reverse in redirection... What exactly is its use as a GM tool... @Joe Blow featured a very modern version... Despite a handle or knurled setscrew these tools are very similar and likely related in origin...BUT that is just an ***umption by me of course... I appreciate your observation and yes you are absolutely correct...
Yes I originally thought adjustable wrench and this is in fact what it is due to the fine finger adjust. Please disregard my chisel holder/winner which is close but no cigar... Congrats to the winners...whom are many here today...and GM302 admirable choice...heck I won then I lost...
Sometimes truth even if it's a humorous poke is stranger than fiction...it may not be but the design is likely far far older than we imagine GM or not...I have an adjustable wrench with early teens or twenties origin...
My chisel holder, plastic and reinforced rubber. I got it from a neighbor when I was cutting limestone blocks for a landscaping project. Saved my knuckles many times.

I remember when those "Goodwrench" adjustable wrench things came out a few years ago but they never went over very big. On the other hand, there have been a hell of a lot of times over the past 60 years that I could and should have used a punch/Chisel holder. The one tool I have needed all my life and never owned even after I split my thumb open with a 2-1/2 lb machinists hammer and brake rotor and needed 4 s***ches.That was in 1976 and I still have the scar.
At the end of the threaded shaft on the end that rests on the nut there is a swivel cap...is that what your referring to Budget? The cap is flat that fits to the nut....I think I see what you're referencing and someone pointed out it was the marble and I agree...I've seen pin punches with a bump on the pin end though...
