This has gone on for a long time. We use up and discard things that later become valuable due to their rarity. I guarantee we are still doing it and in the future some of the cars we drive until they are used up and junked out will be worth big bucks. Is there anyone a**** us who hasn't said, "I wish I still had (insert car name here) but I foolishly sold it. The demo derby guys used up so many early 60's Imperials that you haven't been able to find one in a junkyard in years. In case you are unaware, Imperials finally were banned from demo derby compe***ion because they were nearly invincible. You want to hear a truly horrifying story? My late father-in-law told of a garage owner in Muskegon who cut the back off a Duesenberg and made a wrecker out of it! There was also a Marmon that got the same treatment. This was in the mid-late 40's just after WWII and any kind of car or truck was hard to get. These were just big thirsty cars that were of an age that made it impractical to keep them. They may well have been abandoned to the garage owner after their owners couldn't afford to have them fixed. Their size and power made them a useable subs***ute for a truck, so they got used up. There is something to be said for rarity. If everybody had a deuce coupe, would you want one?
Pretty sure a damn sight of them ended up falling out of B-17's and B-29's and flying out of 16 inch guns in WW2
You’ve got that right! I couldn’t imagine the cool cars, trucks and motorcycles that went to the s**** drives during the war…
There are a lot of HAMB guys who have cars that I consider "wasted" because they get to drive them and I don't. That's all I got to say about that.
Wanna get yer heart broke? Watch British "banger" racing, and replace their cars with ours in your imagination. Or just watch loads of British cars get written off... Then there's demolition derby racing here... don't know if it's much of a thing anymore, but it ate up a damn sight of big block Chrysler engines, Buicks, Cadillacs, and Lincolns.... way too much of the rear wheel drive powertrains we can't find anymore
