Technical ***September 2023 Banger Meet Thread - Beginning the Ber Months***

I picked up the Vauxhall 4 banger yesterday, it's early 20's, 2.3L (140CI) produced 40hp it has a counter balanced crank, full pressure bottom end.
It has a factory relieved block with canted valves,
The plan is to improve the carb/ exhaust (the inlet ports are nearly the same centers as an A) & bigger cam, lightened flywheel etc & put it in the T roadster I recently bought, it's about 50mm (2") longer from fan to Bell housing compared to an A & the rear engine mounts are the right width for a T chassis. It also has a 4spd gearbox.
The plan is run a model A diff & t front axle, steered with the Vauxhall steering box.
This will be a longer term project, I have a couple to finish plus the usual ongoing maintenance. These Vauxhall's has a top speed of 60mph, so even stock should move a T along rather well.

 

The local hot rod club held a Garage Crawl, of the dozen or so stops 4 had bangers, mine being one & another mostly stock tub - no bumpers, lowered in the front & big n little 21's. But I forgot to get pics,
The Riley is an original I believe & is in a single seat modified.
The other 'trunkster' is my mate Dwight's & has heaps of neat details.

I run our Burtz at 28 degrees as well. Works well at this setting.

Todays King of the hill at the F A S T Iowa Hillclimb. 44 mm flat slideMikunis the manifold and valve cover plate, were machined in one machine piece with the oil galley and an external pump driven by the side drive. One more of Dean Robertson’s crazy concoctions, he helped Tom Rowett build and tune, they kept after it in the pits until it the last two runs was in the eight second range for King of the Hill

Glenn, what's the story on this setup?

 

It's an AMR500, they have been used a bit on Bangers, 500cc/revolution

 

It's Hillborn mech injection, but I don't know the story on it, he bought it from the US years ago, the engine hasn't been built yet.

 

Thought it might have been. They seem awful small to me, does it work alright? I've got a few sc14s around, that's what I was thinking of trying...

 

That's quite a machine, what is the head?

Thanks, I had a iron 6:1 LS on my last banger, thinking about a hi comp head for this new one

 

That is impressive. Thanks for posting the pics - I was there a couple of years ago, a lot of fun and I wanted to make it again this year but "stuff" got in the way...

Damn, it really needs to be built

 

Slowly getting my project closer to the fual/air phase of the build and did a quick mockup this last weekend. I've got
a POLICE "B" head, stainless cupped valves, adjustable lifters, and a touring cam with a Burns intake and two 97's.

I really don't like electric fuel pumps and was wondering what mechanical options are out there for bangers?

carter P9091 rotary electronic pump puts out a consistent 2 psi.. no provision for a cam operated fuel pump on a model a engine

 

Sure does, I need to drop in there anyway, I'll get the good oil on the parts
His dad is a local hot rodding legend, who had a stroke 15 yrs ago & continues to panel beat with 1 useless arm!

Different car, but no doubt has parts of the old racecar, I was sitting next to Stampy tonight at our rod club meeting.

 

Didn't he run an A roadster as a racecar many moons ago. I believe he raced at Mangalore when we ran drags there.

 

Yep an A roadster, same/similar blue, it was sold about 10 yrs ago, went to nsw & put on the road.
Stampy's daily is his 34 roadster & the 32 5 win is his wk end warrior

Coming off the hill, down to Turn 11 at Laguna Seca Raceway. I was way off my best time as tires were going off fast!

Our trip to Gulgong for the model a 95th birthday was a blast we travelled 537miles at 70 mph most of the way but in my mums burtz powered model a sport coupe, it ran really great and smooth all the way there

the trip home wasn't so great after pulling the bonnet off to create a bit more air flow because the header was cooking my feet and the pedals (right hand drive)

We made it 251 miles towards home and the engine went bang, distributor wasn't turning and when cranking the engine had no oil pressure

So we had to get it towed the rest of the way, upon some preliminary dissection tonight we discovered the vernier timing gear had disintegrated

Has anyone seen this before, the engine although and early burtz (number 40) hasn't been on the road very long and only has about 12-1500 miles on it so far, more autopsy to come on the weekend
