Jim Krogle T- STREET San Clemente

    Hello,

Jim Krogle captured the essence of T-Street or aka Trafalgar Street. That name is the official street name, but it was too difficult for most to remember and pronounce. So, the shortened name has been accepted for many years in So Cal. Now, rarely does anyone say Trafalgar Street other than real estate agents. Ha!

Besides our long time history of So Cal beaches and great surf spots, one of our favorites is T-Street in San Clemente. It has always been a great surfing spot all year around. Sometimes, it is better in one direction than other seasons. But, when there is a good swell, that train crossover bridge gets a good workout from “everyone and his mother” trying to get the best waves coming in to shore.

For the general public, there are surfing hours and non surfboard hours at this beach. Most popular beaches have some rule for “no surfboards or surfing” around 11 am onward. This is to alleviate the problems with normal beach goers, swimmers, and boogie boarders. No one likes to get run over from a slashing surfboard. So, surfers are out at 11 am all during the Summer months. Despite all schools starting earlier, the final day of “no surfers after 11 A.M.” is on Labor Day, September.

So, boogie boarders have all day to play in the water. There are other surf spots up and down the coast that allow surfers to surf all day. That is a relief. Just a few days ago, my wife and I drove to the local coastal surf spots for a nice sunny Summer day cruise. The waves were good and noticeable were the absence of surfboards at various popular beaches. But, once we got to the overlook for the Trestles State Beach area, the waves were outstanding and each one had a slashing surfer ripping it to shreds coming to shore.

    Jnaki

But, as lonely as a surf spot can get after 11 a.m. the surf keep on coming to the joy of the boogie boarders.

Note: There are some surfers trying out short, soft surfboards without fins for a stand up surf style, following the rules as applied. Technically, they are not real surfboards. Without fins and a soft foam board, it is like a longer boogie board. Early surf history showed big wooden planks without fins on all sorts of waves. Creativity is not lost on some surfers. Ha!

As teens, we tried standing up on those rubber, tubular floating devices all to the joy and laughter of everyone on the beaches. But, we also drove to places that were strictly surfboards only, too. YRMV

by Mr. Cartoon on Jefferson Blvd. L.A.

    Hello,

Mr. Cartoon has been presented on the Saturday Art thread. He is a popular local So Cal artist and is gearing up for the 2028 Olympic Games that is making a big circle for the third time in USA history. 1932, 1984 and now 2028. While the current Olympic Games is scheduled for 2024 in Paris, Los Angeles is in its design and location search phase.

The swimming events in Los Angeles were held in pools. But for 2024, the European counterpart is trying to clean up the River Seine for the water events to be held there. In a river? As polluted as it has been for centuries? As recently as last week, it is still too polluted for humans.

But, can the local artists get together to showcase a great looking So Cal display of art work in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?

    Hello,

Living in So Cal all of my life, one gets to know various folks from being involved in something they like, created or have something we always liked from the first copy.
upload_2023-9-9_4-2-57.png The first copy I still have on my office shelf.

We were in a good position to see, feel and participate in the next level of activity since our highly active hot rod/drag race days. My brother had already started with some of his older friends. But I was stuck at home thinking about the ocean and what was waiting for me on that path.

No one took surfing seriously back then. It was a bunch of wayward folks that did not want to be reminded that they needed to get a job or go to a job. So, later on the weekends, they could lay around on the hot sand and go surfing in the big blue ocean.

It was this free spirit feeling that probably was one influence no one noticed until they were involved in the middle of this explosion of freedom and openness to nature. It was also a determination that it was one sport to try and harness, along with battling the ocean’s idea of smash and move objects out of the way on their pursuit of the same hot sandy beach.

    Jnaki

John Severson was a man of all talents. A surfer, an artist, photographer, and prolific creative writer to document his experiences of being one of the early surfers in So Cal. (Let alone all over the world.) With his writing he was able to capture all of us into thinking we were actually involved in that exciting world. The ocean’s powerful force of being tried to harness or at least enjoy becoming one with nature, had a lot of appeal to young folks everywhere.
upload_2023-9-9_4-5-21.png We all started with black ribbon typewriters and white letter size paper that we all had to erase the errors while typing. Ha! But, this writer, artist and good surfer was the epitome of all things we enjoyed reading and getting involved into the low keyed lifestyle. From his first published art work, to the first copy of Surfer Magazine in print, to the numerous surf movies we all enjoyed... Thank you...

But, how can anyone dispute his choice of office attire and furniture locations? San Onofre with his friends or any beachfront location to keep getting inspiration for his art and stories about this strange new sport that influenced many young teenagers on their own paths.

That old copy of the first Surfer Magazine is a reminder of how far we have come in our enjoyment of something so creative, as movement along the wall of a powerful wave. And, it is not just a So Cal phenomenon, but a world-wide enjoyment of being “one with nature.” YRMV

    Art work by Lisa Kelly

    Hello,

Most of us held back visiting the doctor’s office during the height of the pandemic, with the lock downs and prevention. Some of us were able to stay relatively healthy for the whole pandemic and still are an ounce of prevention during this waning observation period.

I know my doctor is cute and smart, but I haven’t seen her since 2019, just before the whole thing crashed on all of our heads. Now, cases are rising, again, but the doctor’s offices are a place that only the really sick are/were seen. So, staying healthy and minimizing the amount of accidents in the yardwork or general household mishaps is definitely kept to a minimum. although we all have to know that healing anything will take a lot longer than it used to do as 20-30 somethings.

An ounce of prevention sometimes works and other times, does nothing, but make us all feel a little better. Lisa Kelly drew a nice art wall in a doctor’s office to make the light shine a little better and it plays to the mind. Nice place, despite what is the reason or result. YRMV

A woody, a short breakwater jetty, nice waves and a fairly empty beach is always a good thing. A similarities to any local white sand beach in our neck of the woods is a good way to heal all sorts of cloudy minds and bodies... If our doctor's office had this look, perhaps a visit would not be so bad after all...NOT!

    Stay safe and healthy…

    Frank Romero Delores’ Restaurant

    Hello,

Frank Romero is well known in So Cal art circles. He was best know for an old Olympic event art mural as shown in an earlier Saturday art post. It was done prior to the 84 Olympics in Los Angeles.

But, growing up in East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights started his path that led to inclusion of some of his work in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He was inspired by the community events in the early years in So Cal in his art work.

    1984 for L.A. Olympic events

    Note:

"Going to the 1984 Olympics" portrays families traveling from throughout Los Angeles to watch the Olympic Games, which took place in venues throughout Southern California. The painting is a tribute to L.A.’s car culture and was part of a set of murals commissioned for the Los Angeles Olympic
Organizing Committee. Romero painted the mural on the North side of the Hollywood Freeway (101) North between Alameda and San Pedro Streets by using a broom instead of a brush to accomplish the broad strokes that characterize it.

    upload_2023-9-23_4-19-56.png
In 2007, the mural sparked controversy and a necessary conversation about the loss of valuable murals of Los Angeles after it was painted over by Caltrans. At the time, Romero sued Caltrans for covering his work, with Caltrans explaining they were protecting it and other murals from graffiti until funds were available for restoration. Currently, the mural is completely covered by graffiti and is not visible.

    Carlos Manriquez ANGLES FLIGHT 1945

    Hello,

Our infatuation with hillside elevator style moving trains (funiculars) started in Los Angeles when we were little kids. Our dad took us on this most unusual elevator going up a hill side in downtown Los Angeles. Our mom closed her eyes all the way up as she did not like the rickety train car, plus the slope was steep. She did not want to come back down to go back to our car, so she suggested a cab ride back down hill. She went for the cab ride and my brother + our dad went back downhill to see the whole view of the city.

In recent years, the site has been on the historic register and has played plenty of scenes in various movies and streaming TV shows. “Bosch” comes to mind with scenes always using the Angel’s Flight Tram as a set and plenty of scenes filmed there.

    Jnaki

The artwork shows a time way before our time, but captures the essence of the historic place in downtown Los Angeles. It is the location, the surroundings and right in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. The experience when we were little without a care in the world and when we actually noticed things, like steep, slow climbing rail cars going up a steep hillside, made it all the more exciting to a point. Every bump and slight wiggling made all of us wonder what was going on below our feet. Yikes!
    upload_2023-9-30_4-1-10.png 1960
    Note:

My wife and I rode one of the most unusual funiculars in Europe. It is located at the giant castle in Salzburg, Austria. The old cars have been replaced with fancy new ones, but when we rode it to the top and also back down the steep slope, it was breath taking.
    upload_2023-9-30_4-5-19.png
    Hohensalzburg Fortress and Salzburg

The Salzburg funicular top view at the castle is 550 yard up from ground level. Almost 2 football fields long/tall… The original funicular opened in 1892. (look at the people/cars on the ground level)
    upload_2023-9-30_4-6-28.png
    Pentax camera 85mm f 1.8 Takumar lens

Both are historic as funicular cars are concerned and both are still functioning all of these years later. But, the one in Los Angeles is closer to home and actually more fun to ride over the years as things improve the experience... YRMV

    Jim Krogle "Doheny Wood"

    Hello,

We surfed the Doheny Beach area from the time we could stand up on a surfboard. The gentle rollers were made for beginners. As the years moved on and our abilities got better, we looked up the cliffside rocky shoreline to see a small perfectly mounding peak out in the waters. The cliff blocked the view of the surf and rocky shoreline as it jutted out from the land. Most on the parking lot/beach at Doheny did not know about the peaks rolling in, just around the blind spot.

The So Cal beach location was publicized well in the lyrics of a cool song:

“Surfing USA” by the Beach Boys.

You'll catch 'em surfin' at Del Mar
    Ventura County line
    Santa Cruz and Trestles
    Australia's Narrabeen

    All over Manhattan
And down Doheny Way (inside, outside)

    Everybody's gone surfin'
    Surfin' U.S.A.

Over the years, that place was pretty good and we enjoyed walking on the rocky shoreline to get to the paddle out spot. (near where the overpass/bridge of the current harbor is located) since the development of the harbor, the tall cliff was demolished and the road made less of a jutting out curve into the breaking waves. Now, as the harbor is finished for now, the road is a nice winding street to get to the boats or the Marine Institute.

    Jnaki

Jim Krogle captures the essence of the big time, woody show on the Westcoast and the beach front location is open to plenty of visitors. The wide open feeling as a background, plus a slew of woody station wagons brings back an “Endless Summer” style of event.

One of the most fun events was the Woody show on the sands of the Doheny Beach location. Called “Doheny Wood.” It brought all sorts of woody wagons from everywhere in the Westcoast and into the inland areas. Some even drove from other states as part of a nice So Cal coastal vacation.

This year, it is happening next week at the Doheny State Beach location.

    October 14, 2023 – Doheny Wood

Doheny Wood is one of the premier woodie events of the year, presented by the largest Woodie organization in the world, Southern California Woodie Club. Doheny Wood is a wooden vehicle only event, presented at the beautiful Doheny State Beach, Dana Point.

The Doheny Wood event is free to the public, but there is a parking charge by the State of California to park inside the State Park. In addition to all the wonderful woodie wagons on display, the event has a large raffle including many woodie and surf related items.
