Refinished the rear end of my Instant T but all the numbers have been previously buffed off. Casting cover on the comes out to December 28 1959. I need bearings and seals but the Chevy ones show 3 inch diameter. I only have 2.750 . All the Chevy ones I see listed are 3 inch . Can anyone tell me what I have and what I need?

Didn't the 55/6 housing's use the smaller axle bearing's? 57 and up were bigger.
Don't worry about the date on the Pumpkin, they'll fit anything from 55 to 64.
Try looking for 55/6 axle bearing's.

Does the housing have a drain plug? If not it is a 55 or 56. 57 was the first year for a drain plug in the housing

Are there no numbers on the old bearings?

Drain plug's can be added easier than swapping housing ends... ;)

I took the bearing to a machine shop to remove them and could see no numbers. I should have looked closer before they were destroyed in removal.

What axle bearing's did the early Chevy II's use, big or small?

Sounds to me like he has a 55 housing that somebody added an Allen head drain plug to, that has a 59 center section?

Seems so, but he said his ends measure 2.75 and according to rock auto the 55,56 bearing measures 2.83

That could be the difference between a dial caliper and a worn out tape measure... ;)

I think the 57 has the O rings on the bearing no seal. One year only . Looked on Summet I did see the wheel bearing with one O ring. If I remember 57 has a different axle also. I sold a set a while ago and have the center section in my 59 Corvette. Getting old is not easy.
