I am considering switching to 22" Brockman mellowtone mufflers on my 1950 For Club Coupe. I have tried Smithes, Magna Flow and a number of others. While most have a satisfactory tone at the tail pipe, a low drone on the highway has not been pleasant! My car has overdrive so I am typically running at 65mph at 2300 RPM. My desire is for a mild hot rod sound at the tail pipe through the gears with low noise inside while cruising. Can anyone comment on the Brockman mellowtones or any other alternatives that may give the results I am looking for?
I have mellowtones on my 53 Dodge PU and love them. I too have tried Smithys and Porters and like these the best. Search Brockmen Mellotones and a short video of mine should be on there. You will be able to hear them.
They sounded great on just about every car that I heard that I knew had them on it. I even went out of my way to ask a guy with a 54 Ford what he had behind his Y block. The prices are pretty friendly too plus they have the pencil tips too. . 2 inch exhaust only but that is what I plan to run anyhow. I want distinctive tone and sound on my 48 with the 292 and not just loud and obnoxious like I hear way too much of now. I still remember back in my high school days when my friend Ray Rojas would p*** my house in his 50 Chevy hardtop with the split manifold and sweet sounding pipes on his way to take his gal up to lookout point and you didn't have to look to tell it was him. I hunted up the link and that took some doing. MUFFLERS (brockmanscustomparts.com)
My Porters are pretty mellow and I don't notice any drone. However, there is a lot of wind noise in a Model A at speed.
I had planned on Porters and may still go that way as I wasn't sure that the mellowtones were even made anymore. Hopefully I won't get the muffler shop dude's undies in a knot no matter what I show up with muffler wise.
I'm running the short 12" gl*** pack Mellowtones (18" overall) on my dual carb 239" '51 Ford and they are pretty mild at speed inside the car, but have that great '50s sound under load. These same mufflers sound entirely different on my '32, with a built 286"; very aggressive and loud! Engine size and mods have a lot to do with exhaust noise. The 22" will be a little quieter on your '50 than the shorter ones I use. The best thing to do is try a pair and find out what your ears like! The Brockmans are very high quality, made and sold from some very nice people, imo.
I don’t know if you’ll be able to see this but I put Brockman’s on my roadster with a 303 Olds motor. I think they sound great! https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxCGndxOyZj/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
I've had brockman and smittys. I actually could get by with the sound of either, The brockmans have been on one car 10+ years. The smitty's rot out at bottom seams in 2 years like the metal is made out of soup cans. I replaced the 2 year old-rotted out smittys with brockman on 2 other cars of mine
I have 12" Brockman steel on my current coupe build. Here's a pic how they are mounted. The pipes are 1 3/4" dia. And here's how they sound. 59AB Flathead with Isky 1007B cam - 4"crank - .60 over bore
The 30" Mellowtones are great on my Merc flathead with Reds headers. I didn't want loud hot rod but rather a mellower rap/rumble. There perfect and you can easilly have a conversation.
As a first time user of this site I am extremely impressed and most appreciative by the quick response and great input I have received from the members! Once I digest the info I should be able to make a definitive decision! Thanks so much to all who have responded.
Mufflers! Who needs mufflers on a Flathead? I cut my smithys off and run straight pipes. This is on an open car so as said before wind noise is a factor.
