Looking for a little direction before buying parts and appreciate the knowledge here. Got a 36 trans with 39 internals mounting to F1 crossmember and F1 pedal set. My clutch shaft was cutoff, so I need to replace. Any insight into connecting 36 shaft to F1 pedals? Can I connect F1 equalizer shaft to 36 clutch shaft? Helllp!!
A friend who is finishing an AV8 just sent this to me. I don’t know if it applies to your car. Let me know if you need the photos. I finally have the AV8 clutch working. That took three different clutch pedal assemblies and many trips to the machine shop to fabricate operating levers to get the linkage to function properly. I am hoping for a test drive in September. The reason for the difficult clutch problem is that I installed a 40-48 clutch release shaft in the 39 transmission when I assembled the transmission to the '47 engine. I then bought a 47 pedal assembly to mount in the Model A frame. I should have used a '39 pedal assembly and 39 clutch release shaft, but it took me over a year to learn that. The difference is that when Ford went to "three on the tree" shifting mechanism, the control rods that run from the steering column to the side of the later transmission took up the space that had been used in earlier models for the clutch linkage. So they designed a special "compensator shaft" that allowed the levering action to take place on the LEFT of the pedal assembly. In the photos below you can see the later pedal assembly with the clutch action on the left and the compensator shaft which transerred the rotation across to the bell housing's clutch release shaft.
You are going to have to visualize a bit on this one, The rod that the clevis (7532) is on connects to the clutch pedal on an F-1 and when you push the pedal it pushes the arm on the cross shaft forward and turns the arm working the forks. This is the first image that I found and I remember taking the cross shaft and then the bracket off the frame when I harvested the linkage and crossmember off an F-1 frame.
I haven’t built an A-V8, but I would think you couldn’t go wrong by using the complete assembly from one donor. If you are using an F-1 pedal, get an F-1 cross shaft, idler shaft, and end ball thingy. The Ford designed ratios should stay the same and work fine.
Side shift trans linkage makes total sense why they went to that extend shaft set up. I've always wondered why. Read why Docbsa's friend send. I would use a '39 arm off the cross shaft and fab up the linkage from the F-1 pedal to the '39 arm.
I used a '40 shaft thru the trans for the throw out, a '40 jackshaft and F1 pedals and crossmember. You need to shorten the jackshaft and make a mount off the frame for the pivot ball.
This is what I’m thinking. Since I need to replace the clutch shaft, is it possible to install an F1 shaft in the 36 trans? Then the physics stay true to F1 design I’m hoping…?

You can get all the parts you need for this conversion from Early Ford parts in San Dimas California. I did this for my 29 roadster and my 32 ford five window. Easy to set up once you line up your pedals.
