Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JNKYARDDOG_1, Sep 24, 2023.

  1. The other day A friend that owns a shop called to come by and Yack at him..

Showed me a few projects he was working on, And told me about a 60 Vette project he did.

Updated the engine type thing, NO it was not a LS swap on this one.

Then takes me to the corner of shop and this old engine came out of it and asked do you want it?

And you think I would pass this up?

The whole bottom end been studded with ARP hardware along with the rods. Looks to be balanced and 30 over slugs.

Heads have screw in studs and guide plates but there the small 1.74 valve?

Solid lifter cam.... With a single roller chain WTF !

Now the kicker the block is a 58 283 TRUCK !

I think I got robbed, Paid A little more than what the valve covers sell for on Fleebay..

Yep, you got robbed! I mean, he asked you if you wanted that old piece of junk and then CHARGED you for it? The man obviously has no shame

If, you can actually show it goes in a 58 Chevy truck, it might be big bucks to a restorer. IF, that is a factory dual quad, it too would draw big bucks.
I think you did good since those valve covers sell for a couple of hundred bucks everywhere.

You should preface remarks like that with some variant of "facetious". "Speaking from a facetious point of view", "speaking facetiously" and so on ;). Don't you know nothing?;)

You did good on the buy of the 283 mouse motor. My first full engine build was a 30 over 283, and I beat the snot out of it and it never failed me.

  11. Face it.... you got HOSED!! I wouldn't even give him the satisfaction of hearing you bitch about it. Just swallow hard, smile and move on......

Even I would of bought that. I'm not really a fan of the regular belly button sbc. Mainly because they are regular belly button engines. I cant really think of any I might use it on either. But I still would've bought it.

  20. Oh I forgot one more thing...

Has the correct 6 quart trap door corvette oil pan.

I am betting that One of the owners of the car Grenaded the original block And had this built for it.

Sure I would of had a hard time saying no on that one, good score. I'm looking at a Red Ram hemi but on the fence if it is something I need or just want.

There wouldn't be anything more late 50's traditional than pulling the flathead in your '39 and mating that little 283 right up to the 3 speed.

In some respects you are quite correct. With the 283 being the lowest hp gm v8 and, and as today, the cheapest and easiest it would be a good choice. It would be the least likely to blow the 3 speed apart. But they were far from the popularity and commoness of today. As there were so many other good viable options.
The main reason I wouldn't use it in most cars, is to the passer buy its just yet another sbc. It wouldn't be till one who is knowledgeable walks up and has a look they can appreciate what this one is.
I would probably fit this engine into a 57 chev 150 period looking stock car.
