I know I've seen guys spray down bare metal cars with this stuff but I don't know if they paint them afterwards. I've got a project with some bare metal that is going to have to go outside for a while so to protect the bare metal I planned to spray the bare areas down with some Gibbs. Am I in for an *** ache when it comes time to prime and paint later? What needs to be done to fully remove this stuff? Hoping to hear from somebody who's done it rather than just speculation if that's cool.

Why don't you try a piece of bare metal, that's what I did. It works and I don't have any idea how.

I built a lot of bare metal project cars for customers. I sprayed the bare metal ch***is and Brookville body, Rootlieb hood and Tanks tank with Gibbs as many of these cars would be long term projects. I to date have never had a complaint about paint adhesion. I did make every customer aware of what I'd done.

I’ve used it on new sheet metal. It works, all I used was a typical ‘pre paint’ solvent and painted after and I had no problems. If it’s outside for a while squirt some more on every few weeks or so.

Used it for years, wipe surface with acetone, lacquer thinner, or wax and grease remover, it's petroleum based, no big deal.

  6. I have used Gibbs but I've only ever painted something like a small bracket that was treated with Gibbs.
They do make the claim that it can be painted over with no problem, however.

Also, what do you mean by "outside"? As in, sitting un covered in the rain and such?

If that's the case, I don't know that Gibbs will work really well. I've been using Gibbs on my outside welding table (which lives under a carport, 3 sides of the carport have no walls), it does seem to slow the rust and keep it to a mild surface rust, but I do have to keep applying it. It does not look like bare metal anymore, it's brown, but it's not rusting like crazy. I'm not convinced it's the best at preventing rust, but maybe if I were to re-apply it more than a few times a year it might work better.

The PU I just finished the paint on had the fenders and hood soaked in Gibbs to keep them from "browning". I pained the truck last summer and there was no issue at all with fish eyes or other reactions.

@gimpyshotrods has posted in the past about painting over it with no issues.

I do. No issues so far, but it's only been about 15-years.

Thanks for the responses. Also, yes it will be outside in the weather but with a car cover on it. I just wanted to make sure it comes off with lacquer thinner or something along those lines. Sounds like I have a plan.
