  3. Being an east coast guy most of my life, I was always proud of the fact that Andy Southard was from Long Island. Many years ago I was at the Pomona swap meet, and there was a 1926-27 "T" roadster pickup for sale minus engine. I don't know for sure, but I thought it was the roadster pickup That Andy Southard had many years before. I am sorry that I didn't buy it. Now, I really regret not buying it. If I am not mistaken, the pictures of Andy's 1958 Impala was taken at Gary's Auto Body shop in long Island.

One of my favorite Andy Southard pics, taken on the Courthouse steps in our hometown of Visalia
California. My old friend Gene Chan at 16 years old in his T. Rest in Peace Andy!

I like his Impala. A lot of the most iconic images that we cherish today were formed in his eye. Thank you sir.

One day, Andy's landlady introduced him to his famous neighbor: John Steinbeck who lived in the white house two doors down (at 132 Central Avenue) ... they chatted for a few minutes, parted ways, and Andy never saw him again.

Cut my hot rodding teeth on his excellent photography, and journalism skills. In my opinion, the very best of the early ones. Condolences to friends and family, RIP.

I was recently asked how long I've known Andy . . . my immediate reply was that my father & Andy became friends in the late '60s . . . but that I probably didn't meet him until the mid '70s.

Today, I was reminded that I actually first met Andy on July 27th 1969 . . . at ANDY'S 3rd Annual PICNIC . . . when he shot this photo of our HEMI-powered Deuce 5wd Coupe:

    HEMI32 5wd Coupe (from ROD&Custom - Nov '69 - pg13).jpg

    . . . a photo that he included his R&C article that appeared in the November 1969 issue ROD&Custom - Nov '69 - cover.jpg :

    Another icon p***es... R.I.P.
The pic that transports me to the halcyon days is the one of some young rodders and their cars hanging out at his or his parents house. It appeared in an ad for wheels in TRJ some time back

The photo was taken (by Andy) at HIS Salinas, CA home . . . and was used in a CRAGAR Ad on page 9 of issue Number Forty Seven of The Rodders Journal:

In the early '70s, @RodPowell flamed Tom Prufer's Track T ... and Andy striped the flames:

Andy was one of a kind... and one hell of a dude. I haven't talked to him in years, but always enjoyed when I got the opportunity. Dude lived.

So sorry to hear of Andy’s p***ing. Condolences to all. Andy did a photo shot of my still owned 33 Ford Coupe in the 70’s IMG_0689.jpeg IMG_0688.jpeg
