KustomKultures buick's new paint job got me thinking about the route I'm going to take with my 53 Merc. I've seen the Hot Rod Flatz on eBay before and now I think they've expanded their color pallette which is great. However, they are charging $150 a gallon for the paint. Cost wise this seems high. I haven't fully priced out a gallon of regular ol' PPG or the like but I'm pretty sure it's not $150, and flattener is pretty cheap. So my question is, what is the advantage with going with the Flatz paint? Here's a pic that inspired the thread:
Glad my car was inspiring to someone... The last car that my buddy painted was a 55 stude that he bought flatened paint for. i priced this out at the local joint and the guy told me 230.00 and he said that was hooking me up. the paint that i priced out was a vinyl paint that is usualy used on interiors. I like the look of the flatz better than the stude after it was done. just my 2 cents
well the flatz is relabled over the original label (omni ) sold at ppg dealers usually and it is single stage acrylic and fast dry, i have use it and it works great it was only 80 dollars then. i doubt you can buy any ppg for under a buck fifty but it would be a better paint I think . my two cents......
I just received a Flatz color chart today...I'm thinking of going that route on my 51. I just sprayed my bike with PPG, $68 for a pint of mixed red base and that was with a buddy discount....little pricey for PPG, and what I'm going to be doing with the car..
I didnt even use the reducer on mine. the mix directions says 4:1 or 4:1:.5 if you want, and mine sprayed out great. I bought a quart to do the interior and it want much more to just buy the kit than it was to buy a quart of paint and the hardener for it. the clear has to be mixed 4:1:.5 though
I thought it was all single stage? Or do you mean the Hot Rod Flatz Clear for putting over other finishes?
the hot rod faltz clear. i also bought some of the clear off their site to do my interior with. I havent done that yet though. back to the subject of the original post, When i was looking at purchasing paint for my car i was not finding anything that was less expensive than the hot rod faltz other than farm and fleet tractor paint.
The new price for Kustom Flatz is for a urethane, the old price was for enamel. I seriousely doubt that you will buy a gallon of PPG single stage, hardner, and reducer for $150. I'm going to use their maroon when I repaint my car next spring.
I just shot some Flatz, it sprays/flows on nice and dries fast. The colors are very vibrant! A good product IMHO. Does anyone know if you can Mix Spies Hecker base(s) with this stuff?
Here's the manufacture site. The 1 gallon kit is $120.00 if you buy directly from them. This is also where u can get the color chart. http://www.kustomshop.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=ksflatz.bbx ..
I have not used it. I do plan on using it on my car when I repaint it after more bodywork this winter. Before they came out with a urethane, I dont think I would have used their paint. I would have probably gotten the local paint shop to mix me a flattened PPG or U-Tech single stage urethane. With the humidity in maryland, I dont think that enamels spray as well as a urethane, but I could be totaly wrong (does urethane fisheye like enamel too?) I know that a gallon of PPG urethane with hardener and reducer will be a lot more than $120. A gallon of reducer alone is $35, and enough hardener for a gallon probably runs about $70, before you even get into the paint. U-tech is a more budget minded brand from Sikken's parent company, and their prices are usualy lower than PPG by about half, so I will look into them too, as Id rather use my local paint shop, but I still think it will be well over $120 for a gallon of paint and hardner.
Keep this in mind regarding Hot Rod Flatz, the kit comes with a 70+ degree reducer. If you need to shoot at a higher temp, like I did, you have to order their 80+ degree reducer SEPARATE. They will not swap it out since it is a kit. Not the best regarding customer service on that level, but still a good cheap paint solution if you want a satin look. I LOVE the color my car came out and would definitely use them again for other projects. It sprays nice, dries very quick so keep moving and if you get your pressure right you can avoid tiger stripes. We had to scotchbrite my car after the initial 3 coats and recover due to getting some striped areas on the first go around. My buddy sprayed it with me doing prep work and mixing the paint. One kit will give you a solid 3 coats with about 1/8-1/16 a gallon after all is said and done for a 1954 Ford which included Door Jambs, Body and grill area.

I did not use the reducer at all when I painted mine and it turned out good
I'm a cheap ***, 'er "low buck rodder". I wanted some paint to paint two Model A coupes. (I bought a gallon of JD Blitz Black years ago, but can't find it now. That I paid $12 on sale for a gallon. Very cheap.) So I went to Tractor Supply Company and bought a quart of their gloss black soybean enamel tractor paint. (You can catalyze this paint as well.) I added their flat black paint, a quart at a time until I had 5 quarts of flat black in the mix. I think I have $50 in the gallon and a half of paint that I now have. It looks like black primer, which is what I wanted to achieve.
I would agree on the Temperature comment. You have to make sure that the paint is shot in the desired temperature range or the color will come out flat, and the paint will shoot out dry like Laquer primer. I shot some over the weekend, and the heat dried it so fast it left spray lines in the paint.
i talked to them at pomona swap meet and the guy in there both said it was omni with there label on it
little bit, but there pictures still kinda ****. FYI There color chart is just a print out of pictures on glossy paper. Probably save you $$ it isnt a true paint chip color chart (like hok has)
When you say U-Tech do you mean Urotech? It is an industrial SS urethane by PPG. My touring is painted with it and it ran under $50/gal-brodeal.
thanks for info mack, I was just goin to send off some green. Dale owes you some fun dip and chiclets. I swear to god I do
EXACTLY!!!!!! without giving my long *** drawn out story. i have used flatz , twice, scewed it up both times, and then stepped up and used dupont hot hues and still dont quite have it just right. after all the money and work, ive realized it problobly shot in too warm of conditions. anyone whom saw my car at billetproof detroit this year would have seen my "zebra stripes" , that was the flatz.
