One trucking company I worked, for was a flatbed carrier.
All freight of various sizes, shapes, and weight, needed to be secured to the trailer, using chain or heavy straps.
During orientation they stressed the importance of stepping back from a load during
tie-down, to look it over, for possible problems and solutions.
Helped me out on many loads.
Years later I was contracted to train the workers, at a major big city power company, the skills of securing loads, on their flat beds.
They exhibited, to me, the practice of stopping, to take a few minutes, before starting a job to discuss the goals and examine possible pitfalls that might occur during the procedure.
And, of course steps to avoid mishaps.
A practice I like to use in my garage. And yet, still I bleed:p
    :rolleyes::eek:

The past l place I worked at out of high school I would sometimes run the bandsaw. One day after doing that all damn day I nodded off at the saw. Thankfully I caught myself and only cut a square notch in my thumb nail

Perhaps this thread is too vague. I'm pretty sure we could sort it into fires, explosions, cuts, burns, and???

I was raised no S for S (sympathy for stupidity) and am raising my boy the same.

Everyone makes mistakes, it’s part of the learning experience. Anyone who says they never made a mistake is a fool or a liar. It’s the learning we experience during those times that is the true value. Sharing those incidents helps others learn and gives us a chance to laugh at ourselves and maybe brighten another persons day. Some things like lighting yourself on fire while welding is just part of the educated risk we choose to accept for our jobs or hobbies. No one sets out to do bad things to jeopardize our clean underwear, but accidents do happen.

I think the two basic causes of mistakes/accidents are either ignorance or complacence. You can try anything, once.. Anything will work until it doesn't.

I put my used oil in old oil jugs to take to the recycle center. I label them as used oil so there's no confusion. When we moved, one slipped through the cracks and ended up on my oil shelf.

I had just put a shift kit in my TH400 and was filling it with transmission fluid. Looked red at first, but I slowly realized it was actually used engine oil. I had to take the pan off and clean everything out, then put it back together. That was a dumb moment. Luckily I realized it before starting the truck.

I guess that's why South Sea cannibals called the latter "long pig".

I get ya, but if not taught or told, many have to figure it out as they go.
The good ones take their own Darwin nominations and don’t to it again;)

I'm not saying kill all the stupid people but can we remove the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out?

Considering that Darwin awards are only awarded posthumously for removing themselves from the genome in spectacular fashion, we really can be sure that they definitely won’t do it again.

As I mentioned above the stupid ones are the Darwin Awards recipients for removing themselves from the gene pool in spectacular fashion.

When my kids were growing up, I figured if they weren't going to get hurt seriously, let them go ahead. It would give them a basis for making judgements when they were older and the consequences were more serious. On the other hand if they wanted to try to do something, and I figured they couldn't screw it up worse than I could fix it up, why not.

  16. The shop I was at in the mid 80s had a contract with 3M. They had a fleet of E-150 service vans with straight-6 engines. Both engine and trans held 6 quarts. I did the service on one, and accidently put 6 quarts of ATF in the engine, and 6 quarts of 10-40 in the trans. Didn't tell anybody. It came back about 5K miles later and everything was fine....I couldn't believe it lived that long.

  17. I was general manager in an Irvine, Ca machine shop in the '70s next to the John Wayne airport. We had a young likeable guy working for us for a number of years that so much became the poster boy for the term "an accident waiting to happen", it became funny. At work or home, it didn't matter. Arm in a sling, cast on a foot, it was a monthly thing. This was before osha got to be a real pain in the butt. One day I noticed Donny was in the shop wearing tennis shoes. I told the foreman to tell him to get some work shoes, and Donny being Donny, to strongly recommend steel-toed ones. He told the foreman he'd get some as soon as payday came around but that passed with no shoes. I knew he was recently married, so I let it slide til the next payday. Still no shoes. I went out late in the day and told him sorry, but he was not to come back until he had workshoes. He came in my office the next morning all smiles to tell me he not only bought new steel toed shoes, but found some that the steel lined up to the top of the shoe. Cool! That afternoon, he had a drill chuck with a 1/16" drill bit roll off his workbench. It went straight down to his foot where the drill bit actually found an eyelet for the laces! The drill bit penetrated his foot about an inch.
Not too long after that Donny told me he had just got a loan so his wife could get a boob job. (it was Socal, lol). He was excited as hell. She left him about a month after the surgery. He got monthly agonizing reminders for the next 3 years paying the installments on the loan.

Had thanks giving at my house yesterday, after lunch and everyone went home . My kid went to warm something up in the toaster oven . Somehow She got the roll of paper towel to catch on fire . She was screaming , my wife was screaming I ran in the kitchen , grabbed the paper towel and headed to the back door .

burned all my fingers , up under the nail and my palm .

    It hurt like hell .

Once I got back from the ER I explained panic does not help the situation.

if no one panicked , I would have simply knocked the roll into the sink and problem solved .

Now , I got no idea how to pick my nose or do anything else for the next little while

I was doing a little welding in the garage, being very cautious, I placed the can of brake clean well away from the fire zone. Sparked up my wire feed and lit up the rag I used……RIGHT UNDER MY HELMET.

Van......I understand the love of family...quick decision under a chaotic situation...sorry for the outcome...could have been much worse, but you were hurt...hopefully at a minimum keeping flammables away from ignition source is been noted out of this unfortunate situation so shortly after the other one...get well soon Hamber...
