Today was day one for a first time dirt drag event at Sturgis South Dakota Dragway. There were enties from a 6 state area all with early cars. Flag drop girls, no trophies, no time slips, just pure fun. Tomorrow the gates and tech open at 8 am and the flag drops at noon. Come join the fun.

Two days of fun in Dakota dirt at Sturgis Dragway. This was a first time event for the Counts of the Cobblestone and Sturgis Dragway. The track owner was so impressed he wants to do 2 dirt events in 2024. Check out Facebook Vintage Sturgis Dirt Drags for pics and updates.

  13. We used to have the HOT ROD DIRT DRAGS here in Monte Vista Co. but the last one was about 3 years ago with the coming of covid. I had heard rumblings of them coming back, looks like maybe rolling up to S.D. next year..

I was there in my single seater. Drove it pretty hard and floated a valve and smashed the electrode on the spark plug. Must have been the last pass of the day. Drove home on five cylinders!
Luckily the electrode was still on the plug but broke off when I went to regap it! C2080AAC-34F7-4690-89C0-9A83C2AC8D0E.jpeg

When I came across my Edmunds aluminum head I put spark plugs in that have a longer end that threads into the head. The original plugs that were in the cast iron head were shrouded way up in the aluminum head. I was able to get four of the other plugs electrode to index between the valves sitting directly underneath. I need to buy some indexing washers and I’ll be golden.

I always tell my son, “it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow”. These events are great! Thanks for sharing.

The Sturgis Dirt Drags was a super good event. It's well worth the travel distance to attend next year.

Yeah.......sure miss our trips to the Pukwana SD area for pheasant hunting this time of year. In the good old days, I would get an extended van out of the company car garage....leave Detroit....pick up Iowa and Wisconsin friends and be there in time for noon hunt next day. Priceless !! Also loved exploring the shelter belts for lots of old cars, trucks and tractors. Those were the days........sure wish my knees still worked at 77yrs. old !!

  26. Very few cars left in shelter belts out here anymore. Most were gone by the early 90s

  27. The drags planned for Monte Vista in 2023 had to be cancelled due to the inability to get insurance for that venue. That was the reason the previous promoters quit.

Vintage Sturgis Dirt Drags got some national attention with an article in Hemming Motor News website Hemmings.com. This event iijs going to grow.

  30. You're welcome, Mitch. We substituted a different cool event to bring people to the San Luis Valley...Draggin' Main, a tour through some historic mountain towns to North Clear Creek Falls, with lots of fun stops and a block party in Monte Vista afterwards.
