Ranger 8.8's came in two widths '90-'92 were 56.5 WMS to WMS and '93-'09 were 58.5 WMS to WMS. Depending on your year and wheels the later years 8.8 might be on the wide side.

I have my local salvage yard looking for one for my 54. Those gears are a little low for me, I'm looking for 3.55.
Your 54 looks great by the way.

Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated.

I have a 31 Spline 8.8 Limited Slip out of a Ford Explorer in mine. I narrowed the long side 4 inches and put another short side axle in and its 56 inches which is the same as stock. Mine had 3.73's but I changed them out to a 3.42 since I don't have overdrive and I'm running a 25.5 tall tire.

The Ford Explorer rear ends are getting harder and harder to find, but here's an inside track to find one that nobody is looking for or aware of. The solid axle Ford Explorer rear ends went from 1995 up to 2002 before they went independent rear EXCEPT on the Explorer Sport Track. The 2003 Ford Sport Tracks were still solid rear and had the same strong, disc brake, 31 spline limited slip, 3:73 gear. That's what I just found for a friend in a local yard and it was only $300.00

Hope that helps someone find a nice 8.8.

The hardest gears to find are 2.74’s which are great for a non OD transmission and a Cruise-O or a C-4 and are no longer made. The drum brake rears can use F-150 brakes; they are 11 by 2-1/4” shoes.
