Projects Traditional humor?

  1. How's this for era correct looking welds? Lol. Not what I was going for. I'm good at grinding.....not good at welding. I was just trying to get good penetration for this brace I put on this perch plate. And before anyone says the brace wasn't needed keep in mind before I welded the brace on I had it on the press to straighten it out lol. Didn't bother grinding it because I wasn't too concerned about how these looked. But for being mig they came out looking awfully stick welded to me lol IMG_2023-10-14-20-05-17-106.jpg IMG_2023-10-14-17-31-54-138.jpg

You do know what mig stands for? Maybe it's good...

I'm not seeing evidence of penetration. Just metal stuck on the surface, like when people put their name or initials on a piece of equipment.

Pope, you might want to delete this thread, it's not going to end well.

  5. The uglier welds penetrated. Smoother ones were to just cover it up lol

May I suggest that before you do anything like that again, that you take a piece of steel a few inches wide and maybe a foot long, Use soapstone to draw as many parallel straight lines as you can fit on the plate about half an inch apart and lay down beads on those lines. Do a plate flat down, then stand a plate on edge, draw more lines and lay down more beads. When you feel up to the challenge, put the plate overhead and work on more beads. Looking at what you have done in your example, your machine is too cold and you're moving too slow. You need to work on developing muscle memory so that you get consistent welds. On a positive note, you're pretty good with black paint. You've almost got the welds covered up completely ;). Wish I was closer to you, I could probably get you lined out in an afternoon. Then, it's practice, practice and more practice.

So you're saying they all penetrated? 'Cause I sure don't see any smooth ones.

Are you doing any welding on your frame, or other components that could be a safety issue if the welds were to fail?

    Sage advice.

Maybe invest in some cheater lense. It will help you see what you’re welding
I’ve seen smoother welds done with a stick than the MIG booger welds you’re showing.

  9. Yeah to be honest after getting the super super ugly spot welds to penetrate I used the opportunity to use this for practicing beads lol. What looks like four spots of slag away from the edges is actually where I drilled four holes in the angle iron to spot welds first

  10. Yeah the rare occasion I do weld I usually used an auto dark helmet. But the one I was using till recently ****ped out when I was welding a patch on a customer tail gate. Before I do any heavy welding I'll get another one

I was taught that if you have to grind your welds , that makes you a grinder , NOT , a welder !!!

I'd love to see that cut apart and polished to see what actually penetrated there. When I got my new welder I did a lot of practice and need to do more.

Looks like you need a lot of practice and maybe a better helmet before doing any critical and/or customer stuff.

As far as the traditional humor part, bad welds aren't funny and the vintage farm welds on the fenders of my 46 are significantly better than those shown.

When it come's to the art of joining, two pieces of metal together, via welding, regardless of the medium,
TIG, MIG, STICK, OXY-ACETYLENE, there is always room for improvement !

  19. On the Welding Scale, you're better than "chicken poop" welding, but not as good as a "stack of nickels" welding.

I've got a 'nothing-to-do-with-nothing' story for the tribe.........
Yesterday I drove about 75 miles to the west to an 'end-of-the-trail' type outdoor bar I know of to get a better vantage point to watch the eclipse. The wife and I had these cheesy, cardboard, dark eyegl***es I bought from a roadside vendor and what do I happen to see at the bar? This other fellow who showed up with his welding helmet.

Oh, I don't know! There are only 5 truly great welders in the world, and I get 4 Christmas cards each year ;). That's "traditional" humor, but it's the truth ;).

Looks like you need to turn up the heat, add some voltage to it.

    ...

  22. I figure for what this brace is for it'll still work fine. I'm guessing the plate was bent trying to use on the wrong rear end. I'll be using it correctly. And where I saw noticeable penetration should be enough to add some rigidity. Like I said I didn't just weld the perimeter. I drilled four holes in the center and plug welded and hit with a hammer before moving to the perimeter lol

They all said it, practice, practice, practice. And what I was taught: remember your ABCs. Always Be Comfortable. If you are not you'll find that it's hard to follow the path, not shake, and all of the other bad things.

Maybe you needed something larger as a test tool, as in BFH ;)

  26. Yeah my carpal tunnel didn't exactly help. One of the spots where it is really thick is where my hand twitched while trying to lay a bead and missed half of what I was welding. Had to go back over it lol

  27. I used a two pound snap on dead blow hammer......same hammer I use to drive dodge ball joints out in one or two hits lol

With the glossy black paint, its pretty hard to really see what the weld actually looks like.

If the welder thinks its a good weld, I can't argue with him without a personal, in real life, inspection. Even then, the paint will still hide a lot.

I've seen really pretty welds fail, and I have seen some really ******, bird ****, looking weld hold to huge pressure. Probably 1/2 the welding repair I did in my welding shop was to re-weld failed welds. I will not p*** judgment on the welds pictured.
