    Hi,
    After many years of looking, I took the plunge earlier this year and got myself a 1951 288 Packard Straight 8 engine with 3 speed gearbox and overdrive attached...
    Will probably accept plenty of advice over the next year to pursue this rod project...
    For the moment, I need to locate and buy a new clutch throw out thrust bearing.
    It is a NICE, made in Philadelphia and reference 6592.
    Usual searches do not bring any results...
    The one on the engine is cracked in several places...

    What are your plans for the straight 8? What body are you going to put it into?

    Hi BJR,
    I have a small ch***is that no doubts will need some length added to it!!!

    Not sure I want to keep the overdrive bit, makes the transmission quite long!!!

    Would be good if you could put up the dimensions of the bearing. Someone may have one that fits. I can't be the only person with a large tin of clutch thrust/throwout bearings on a shelf in the workshop.

    IMG_2387.png There appears to be a web site packardinfo.com that’s is familiar with that number and shows some others you can use. Check it out

    You got all the usual suspects. Keep the OD, you'll be so glad

    Highlander is correct. Last I heard, Packard OD's were 'bout as common as chicken fangs. Hopefully I'm wrong. Damn tough stuff though.

    Fitted the gearbox on the engine yesterday, gosh, it is LONG with the OD... Mind you, from photos I've seen, the bit that replaces the OD is about as long!!!

    Thanks for the pointers, but the ref keeps coming in literature, not as a part I can purchase!!!
    Off to measure the thrust bearing...

    Awesome!!
    I have a soft spot for straight 8s', especially Packards. I am currently building a roadster pickup with a Packard 327 for power. I've adapted a modern T-5 trans. My project has been stalled for the last year due to family issues but I'm very close to getting started again(famous last words). Here's a link to my build thread;
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/straight-8-rpu-build-thread.1083302/

    and here's a link to me firing up the engine for a test run (it was running out of gas near the end);

    Lots in my Tin, but sadly nothing bigger than this.

    Combo the frame rail with a 1” .120” wall tube about 2-3” above, or below, the rectangular frame you now have. Every 12-18” put in a round spacer. Good luck.

    Great project! Love those 8’s. I agree to keep the OD. I’m putting one in my AV’8 (as long as I can make it all fit). Makes the driveshaft really short!!

    what make and model OD is it? Looks a lot like my Borg Warner R10.

    An engine that m***ive deserves a "big car" ch***is of some sort, some pontoon fenders and a boattail.
