Dave Doogan was from Willow Springs, IL. I didn’t know Dave but I cold called him about ten years ago, I explained that I wanted to talk about his F/A days and he came to my house. Obviously he was very proud of his 1963 win at Bakersfield over Mooneyham and Sharp. I don’t recall asking him but I suspect Karamesines and Don Maynard had some influence on his combination. Don Maynard died a few weeks before the March Meet that year, victim of a driver that crossed the centerline and hit the car he was riding in with another local racer, Kenny Hirata.
Probably only local guys, and old ones at that, remember Dave but he, Gabby Bleeker from Evergreen Park, IL and John Forstka from Whiting, IN were fuel altered standouts in their day.
