UPDATE I appreciate all of the comments and help. I had them go through the trans again and replace some gears and converter. Noise has gone.
Probably converter as I did not see any gear damage. Or maybe bearings. But it is good to go now. Will keep watch, however. Thanks again all.

I just had a rebuilt AOD installed, and it makes a whine noise in first and second gear. Less noticeable in third and cannot hear it in fourth.
I removed a C4 and did not change anything else. Same rear end, same drive shaft but shortened slightly.
This transmission company is telling me that it is normal to hear that whine noise but i have never had a transmission that made that noise.

Has anyone had experience like this and is this to be expected from this type of transmission. Or should i expect some form of failure down the road.?
    Please help.!!

Using the TV cable? If not it will die quickly. There is a constant pressure valve body (B&M?) that still requires the cable but takes the gnats ass dial in out of the picture.

I would wonder if the planet gears have a bad bearing in them.

Well I have an AOD with a shift kit with the opposite problem. Very nice firm shifts and down shifts however after the shift to overdrive a whine starts that is very loud. Not sure what to do or what’s causing it.

Very hard to get good bearings anymore in my opinion.

I have been playing around with both Ford AOD as well as Chevy over drive units in my last couple of builds. I’m not a transmission expert by any means, so take this info either way. My first over drive was a 200R in my 55. It took less than a week of me chasing down the whine before the trans was destroyed. I took it to a reputable rebuild shop and they fixed me right up. Bad TV cable alignment had caused higher line pressure in the trans and that ruined it. My second experience is with a Ford AOD and I have been very careful so far with making sure the correct throttle and trans cable mount is in place for correct alignment as well I have used the lokar parts and “gauge” to set up cable tension. I’ll be taking the 50 Merc to the transmission shop before we put any miles on it in the spring. Better they dbl check my work and set it up if needed. Cheap insurance to have the experts look it over.
At any rate, the whine I experienced was a very bad thing. Check those two points over asap, or take it to a shop that will make sure it’s set up 100% for you.

Sounds like the pump or converter. I'd confirm pressures with a gauge and adjust the TV accordingly before pulling the trans and pump out.

  10. Don't know how loud of a whine you're hearing but I seem to recall that TorqueFlite transmissions from the 60s and 70s had a faint whine in low gear only. According to Mopar it was considered normal due to the way that some of the planetary gears were cut and went away in second and high gear. The OEMs probably wouldn't tolerate that these days, but you never know.

It would be interesting to find newer model Ford with the same model AOD trans and take it for test drive and see how it sounds. If the trans was rebuilt and installed locally make sure to let the shop know about what you're experiencing. And get it in writing if they say everything is working properly as soon as possible. If the rebuild was done away from your local area I'd still contact them and/or the vendor and share your concerns.
