The 327 makes a lot of sense in that car though, You shouldn't have to disturb any sheet metal that isn't already disturbed, bolt on speed trinkets are cheap and when you tire of it the engine and trans can come out and it will be hard to tell that there was ever a Chevy in it. Get someone to fab some adapters for Y block valve covers and half the so called********** ford guys won't know the difference anyhow.

Put the 327 in since you have it and have fun. Spend the $ you saved on fixing up the rest of the car.:)

I'm a Ford guy but I like the Olds, Caddy suggestion. Maybe even a Hemi. In the end you'll probably just put the chebby in and be different just like everyone else.

I’m liking the 460 idea. Tons of them out there in pickups, vans, motor homes and work trucks. Wouldn’t take much to have a killer street motor.

Here’s your answer. 557 cid on the cheap would be my choice.

A few years ago I decided to get rid of the last car my dad ordered, a ‘69 LTD with a 390ci and C6. He ordered it to tow a trailer and was only insured from May to end of Sept. 120,00 miles on the clock. Not even one reply! I changed my mind and now will restore. In short around here the FE apparently have few lovers but that engine even with a two barrel had plenty of power!

Put a big Ol Y-Block in it, and I'll make you a killer deal on a 6x2 manifold for it!

Install the 327 with a 4 spd and a cross ram, can’t beat that for a great fun to $$ ratio. But I can see that you’re agonizing over the possible conflict of interest, being a Chevy guy with a Ford body.
    So, being a true Chevy guy, I see only two options;
    1. Install the 327 and show ‘em that a Ford is coolest with Chevy power, or
    2. Clean it up and sell it for a tidy profit and use the proceeds for a Chevy project.
If I was younger, I’d love to have it. I have no brand loyalty whatsoever.

Not a chance. Me and the Guvment don't see eye to eye. Even project X went back to it's roots.

My 2 cents , balls to the wall built****mins Diesel , if dare to be different . Don’t think they don’t make major HP and torque . Just teasin I prefer the FE , but if your tight on funds , use what you have and drive it like you stole it !

There's a ford guy up here dropping in a FE into a 55 chevy got the chevy guys pissed to no end but ask them about chevy to a ford and that's ok whats good for me is not for thee. If you have the engine ready to drop in go for it just keep the hood closed .

Had a gent put a small block ford in a camaro and oh my did the chevy guys get snotty, same ones who said engine loyalty didn't matter...

I always thought it was funny how that worked...

I vote small block ford, money later? Throw a big stroker kit in that sb ford.

Funny how on the street people get uptight, but in the pits it doesn't matter, at least in my experience.

:D Just having some fun about brands! All my transport trucks are & have always been GM products.

I too am trying to figure out what to do next about building or buying a gasser type car. Going to try to take my buddy Lloyd's advice & not spend years making it perfect this time so I can drive it!

I am a Ford guy and 56 is my favorite year.

I would still use the engine and transmission you have.

Cool thing. The 327 is about the best sbc. But it's still a belly*****on common sbc. The 302 is about the most undesirable ford v8 there is. Any FE is expensive but cool. Cheap good runner y-blocks come up from time to time and can run strong. A Chrysler hemi would be supercool. I did read an article on how to rebuild them for the same cost as a sbc.
A big olds would also be cool.
However if you think outside the box a cheap 472 or 500ci caddy could be found. A 455 Buick maybe. Have a hunt around. There are many more options than ford or chev.

My cousin ran one of those in the early 60's with a 421 Pontiac ....with Tri Power
It's your car build it however you want ... but there is something to be said for WOW Factor when you pop the hood and something unexpected is sitting between the frame rails ...
    in the late 50's early 60's many ( Gasser's ) got Big Block swaps such as 390 Cadillac's , 421 Pontiac's , 401 Buick's were very common Dare to be Different !

You are spot on. The car is going into winter storage, so nothings going in immediately as I have time to evaluate options. What will guide the build aside from cost, Is my personal passion for the Bay area Cars that ran at Fremont between 65 and 69, and the cars I saw in San Jose as. Kid. The build style screams mid to late 60s, wants more than a 220 horsepower at best 302. There were some screaming 289s and 283s in the day, this particular 302 is just not one of them. A hot Chevy in a Ford is still better to me than a 19 second faux gasser with a stock Ford engine, although the Latter is still better than yard art.

I prefer Ford's anymore, after 1987, put a Lot of miles on the earlier Chevys though. That Ford out pulled a coal rolling Duramax up the Sunol grade while I was towing a 75 f250, vs his Acura on the trailer, and I have a 351. Tuning is everything, the Duramax guy needs to learn how to. I think I need to re evaluate my Chevy guy Status. I like my Chevys, but really I'm just a car addict .

  28. @327Eric ,

I am also heavily addicted & when it comes to old ones I also love them all! I have 12, 6 are from 4 different GM divisions (Chevy, Cad, Olds, Pont). The other 6 are Amc, Nash & Jag!LOL

Now my transport trucks are different matter...Both Duramax diesels have over 600,000 miles each on the original engines & transmissions! I chose not to out pull anybody going up a grade because I get paid by the mile, so I want the great fuel mileage. I never push the loud pedal past half way going up hill. On the steepest grades, I run up them at about 52 mph one gear below overdrive. I basically drive by the boost gauge.

Back to topic...I think it is great that you have the winter to decide/gather parts. Clearer decisions generally come with time, but then again we are car guys, so our decisions are driven by our addiction & heart!:D

I Quit hauling 20 years ago, Customers were demanding I get a newer truck, the money wasnt there. I had to pass the Duramax guy to keep momentum, I crested the peak at about 52 53, my average, no effort. I currently have A 59 ElCamino, Ranchero,F100, the 56 Ford, and my ot Ford tow rig, Buick and GMC.
