Yep, music to my ears but if he was in an HOA I bet his neighbors would piss and moan. When I was a teenager in the late 60's there was a guy a couple blocks away with a Dodge Charger AA/FC, I never knew it was there until he fired it up about 8:00 one night and I went running to see what it was but because it was echoing I went in the wrong direction. When I finally found it they were just rolling it back into the garage and the guy saw me and said I should come back the next time I heard it and he would let me check it out. I had already seen another Funny Car on a transporter around town but hadn't heard it run, boy, this budding hot rodder didn't have a chance after that, I was hooked.
I have no first-hand experience but here's my best guess. If necessary I'm certain that there's someone here who can set me straight. The squeeze bottle in his hand has gasoline in it. These engines won't fire up cold with alcohol or nitro. So they get a squirt of gasoline to get the ball rolling. The small tank on top of the scoop has alcohol. After a short warm-up on gas the valve on the small tank is opened and allows a controlled amount of alcohol to drain out of the small pipes leading into the scoop and be fed into the engine. There are no direct lines or fittings connecting the tank to the throttle body. After a bit more heat builds in the combustion chambers you see him, I believe, opening a valve on the main fuel tank in front of the engine which then begins feeding nitro to the fuel pump. He then closes the valve on the small alcohol tank and removes it from the scoop as the nitro starts getting pumped directly into the engine. This is when the engine's exhaust note changes and you begin to see the header flames. And if you're in the pits watching this live it may also be when you believe it's time to "duck and cover"! Somebody else will have to fill in the details of the shut-down procedure. He appears to close the nitro valve at the tank. But I'm not sure if he's squirting a little more gasoline or something else into the scoop to stall the engine.
He sure had a little pep in his step to light that off. My friend fires his on gasoline, once it has a little heat he switches to the alcohol/nitro mix.
