Got my samples in for testing.

Thanks for sharing Pat! Actually I was remember some guy die stamped a Willys trunk lid using two plastic dies and then welding together the two stamped sheetmetal! watching yours dies I think they are made from plastic but then I take a better look and would be cast? I'm trying to educate me in the die stamping process, that's why my curiosity!

 

They are cast steel then machined. Look up “Mcgraw Hill” books on stamping dies. There is tons of good information.

I've been fortunate over the last 40 years to have scored 2 originals along with the Auburn sheet metal. I have one in my deuce 3 window and one in my deuce highboy roadster. The 3 window is original finish chrome but I had to have the roadster insert re chromed. I had a difficult time finding a plater once I told them what it was. They knew it was a fairly rare piece. I finally landed at Precision Plating which at that time was in Quincy Ill. They did an excellent job but that was 12 years ago and then it was $450. I assume yours will be plain finish? Have you arrived at a cost and availability yet?

Thank you! They are currently in production, and will be available in September. I had to delay production a little bit to finish up some larger projects I had in my way. I have started to sell off some of the sample panels I have if anyone is interested.

 

1932 Hupmobile used the same panel just like the Auburn.

 

Definitely a good looking dash, very similar but not the same. The Hupmobile speedometer is nearly identical to the auburn.

I think mine is OG.... it's engine turned finish... so 2 questions... did it come that way or did some one have it done.... and how the hell do they do that????

 

@2FORCEFULL That's a beautiful dash you have. I believe these two photos are representative of how they came from Auburn.






As you know yours is engine turned, which is a great look. @Pat Pryor would know if any came from the Auburn factory with an engine turned face.

Yes, it's very likely at some point in time someone engine turned your dash. It's kind of become a lost art. I like the look so much that around 6 years ago I learned how to do it.

As far as engine turning, its a pretty fun process if you like detailed and tedious work. I find it to be enjoyable and relaxing. I started engine turning dash panels years ago. Here is a thread I started that explains the process.

I am unsure if original Auburns had engine turned panels, I dont think they did but I could be wrong.

You have definitely mastered the art of engine turning! Your panel came out great!

 

I'm not 100% certain, but I do believe the 8cyl cars had the checkerboard pattern and 100mph speedometer, and the V12 cars had engine turned panels and 120mph speedometers.

They came engine turned or several different damascene d finish from what The late Jim the Auburn guy told me
