i bought an 86 gmc pickup with a 305 and about every 300 miles i burns up the coil and ignition module, i have replaced the distributor with a remaned one but it still happens and i also replaced the alternater and checked all the wiring and everything seems fine does any one have any ideas cause its got me boggled
might be to hot where its at! put a heat shield or some of that heat tape! it might work!!! just a sugg.
make sure it's grounded good, if it has the coil in the cap look for the ground bar under the coil. if it's the one with a separate coil check the voltage going to it and also make sure the dizzy/plate is grounded good.
the coil is in the cap the coil is grounded but there is no ground wire where the ignition wire and distributor wires come into the cap the mechanic at my work said this shouldnt make any difference
it does, had late 70's elco towed into the shop i worked at (from another shop), they looked at it for a few days because it kept blowing coils. it was missing the ground bar, put one in and it didn't have a problem again. the other shop said that they put in 3 coils and they would die after a few days of driving with each new coil. just run a new wire to a good ground and see what happens. there's not to many things that will kill the coil/module, either bad ground, power problem or broken parts.
Are you putting enough of the heat sink grease on the new modules? You wouldnt think it makes that much difference, but it does.
plenty of grease on the modules it must be that ground wire cause have tryed everything right down to the alternator thinking that the voltage regulator might be sending a voltage spike to the distributor. it sucks that i had to spend hundreds of dollars on replacing good parts and blowing out new parts all because of a 2 inch wire!!! oh well i guess thats just how luck works!
