Jim Krogle DOHENY BEACH Dana Point https://jimkrogle.com/

Yes, it is another art drawing of Doheny State Beach in So Cal... But, the reason for another Jim Krogle artwork is that it fits today like a glove. "If it fits, we must commit..." to paraphrase a famous quote from the So Cal past... ha!

    Hello,

The So Cal artist makes fine art from all or at least most of the popular spots along the southern coastal shorelines and attractions. He captures the scene with a little pizazz. The detailing is outstanding. Check out this online address: https://jimkrogle.com/

The south coast beach area is a busy place for the last 2 weekends. First it was Eddie Vedder, the Killers and the Foo Fighters in concert along with Chrissy Hynde in the same location at Doheny State Beach area. Now, it is the Doheny Wood Show along the water’s edge.

    October 14, 2023 – Doheny Wood

Doheny Wood is one of the premier woodie events of the year, presented by the largest Woodie organization in the world, Southern California Woodie Club. Doheny Wood is a wooden vehicle only event, presented at the beautiful Doheny State Beach, Dana Point.

The Doheny Wood event is free to the public, but there is a parking charge by the State of California to park inside the State Park. In addition to all the wonderful woodie wagons on display, the event has a large raffle including many woodie and surf related items.

One of the most fun events was the Woody show on the sands of the Doheny Beach location. Called “Doheny Wood.” It brought all sorts of woody wagons from everywhere in the Westcoast and into the inland areas. Some even drove from other states as part of a nice So Cal coastal vacation.

This year, it is happening at the Doheny State Beach location. TODAY!!!

Prominent locals as part of the sponsorship team. Bracketeer- Cars and Coffee folks, Beach Fire Restaurant...one of the best in San Clemente downtown, the Coach House Entertainment Center and of course, Rainbow Sandals. I have a pristine leather pair of Rainbow Sandals from the very early days that gets worn on certain days... Have to dress up on some occasions... YRMV

Dreaming of Red White and Blue artist: Randall Sexton

    Hello,

Randall Sexton is well known in California and has taught art in various forms at colleges. His work is outstanding and he has included automotive parts to connect with the early road warriors. Trailers behind cars have always intrigued me. Towing is a difficult process and even towing our 1940 Willys Coupe to the dragstrip and home or to a 30 mile tow to a shop for some intricate work progress was a chore in itself. We grew up from 1946 to 1948 in a trailer about the size of the one behind the 56 Nomad.
    upload_2023-10-21_5-49-7.png
It was the least expensive place our dad could afford for the time being, until we could get our situation in place and start living in a nice community. My brother and I slept in a converted kitchen bed that the table dropped to form a platform and the cushions fit in place to be the mattress. We were small enough to sleep in that little space. In the morning, our bed disappeared and out came the kitchen breakfast table, the lunch table and our fine dining dinner table. Ha!

When we saw other trailers being towed behind various cars, trucks and station wagons, we always wanted to travel to campsites with one in tow. But, our dad had his fill of small trailer living and decided that a house was best for his growing family. A house with a yard great for one more mouth to feed, our cool dog.

The 56 Nomad was a very cool car in the Chevrolet field. But, our dad was a Buick fanatic and stayed with his 4 door Buick sedans for the family usage. Then in 1957, he ventured out to buy his first large 2 door Buick Roadmaster sedan. The 56 Nomad would not be a part of our car ownership at the time. No one else drove at the time and so, our dad did all of the driving.

But, our surf adventures would have replaced his 56 Chevy Nomad when he bought a 63 Buick Riviera, that is for sure. Then we would have had a tow/push/parts station wagon for our next hot rod/drag race experience with out 1940 Willys Coupe with an SBC motor, including a 671 supercharged version. Yowza...

My brother and I talked about what a tow/push/parts vehicle we would like to tow the finished version of our 1940 Willys coupe to the Nationals in 1960. A yellow chevy two door station wagon or a yellow Nomad... that would have been something...

    Artist: Bill Drysdale

    Hello,

Local So Cal artist, Bill Drysdale captured the essence of the historic Crab Cooker Restaurant in Newport Beach, right at the foot of the Newport Pier. Thousands of folks, tourists, locals and workers have all driven by a million times. The road is the leading into and exiting the Balboa Peninsula. If the Newport Beach location was a mystery, the traffic can get heavy sometimes. It is on the main road from the ever popular road to the Wedge surf jetty location. So, if the Southern Hemisphere swell is pumping, this road has lots of traffic.
    upload_2023-10-28_3-33-53.png
Bob Roubian, opened the Crab Cooker in 1951. Bob learned the Mesquite broil to give the fresh seafood a taste like no other. Boiling has its place as well as grilled cooktop. But, the freshly grilled on a barbeque style cooker gives the flavor like no other. As far as the standards at this place, the clam chowder is outstanding and flavorful.

It was one of those places that draws you back just because of the quality of the food. The smoky aroma and taste, later, was to die for when served at the table. My wife and I used to come here in one of the first seafood adventures. Our Harley would also be parked at the curb and a great lunch would be the goal. Then later on, when the 327 sedan delivery days were there, it was a regular at the curb and great dining inside. If one did not find a place to park nearby, then the place was full and the wait times were long.

    Jnaki

Over the years, it always had the ambience of a fun place to be and the food never disappointed. During the covid starting days, business was off, so it was time to upgrade the whole facility and location. No, it did not move, it is still just steps away from the Newport Beach Pier. But, now, it is fully renovated and up to city/state building codes as per the modern times.

From the outside, it looks as if it never left 1950… as the TV ad said when two brothers were in question:

“Try it, you might like it…” Yum… Seafood at its finest, anywhere... Quality and history continues in this part of So Cal...

"50 Ford De Ese Eme" Etching by Gilbert “Magu” Luján (1940- 2011)

    Hello,

Gilbert “Magu” Lujan was born near Stockton, CA. Then, grew up in East Los Angeles. His influences were the cultural aspects of the community activities in that area. An original founder of the “Los Four” group of artists, he developed a sense of fantasy and culture all mixed into many views of our society.

The 50 Ford artwork was finished in color to give it some detailing. It is culturally constructed and showcases the automotive designs that we all have come to accept as “Lowriders.”

    Hello,

We saw a clean yellow 1939 Chevy sedan sitting along a fence at an outdoor car show in Northern California. It was during our S.F. Bay Area road trip and photo shoot work tour and extended vacation days. The Chevy stood out due to the outstanding color, but the flames were the major attraction. It fooled us until we got to know the builder, style and appearance comparisons with other 39 Chevy sedan custom cars.

It was sectioned without going overboard and making it a skinny work of customizing. There have been plenty of old custom cars from the very early days that actually looked like someone stole a section of the whole body and had the Jolly Green Giant step on the roof. The section made those cars look unusual and oddball at the time. This yellow 39 chevy sedan looked normal with the bright yellow paint and colorful green flames.

From our introduction to Rod Powell’s artistic endeavors, came the fascinating artwork in all styles of creativity. We were totally impressed with the designs and detailing in his custom art. YRMV

    West Sacramento Artist, Bruce Gossett

“West Sacramento resident and artist Bruce Gossett is another one of those overnight sensations that has been more than 30 years in the making. Born at the close of the sixties, he has spent most of his life in California immersed in art and gearhead culture.”

“A mostly self-taught artist, Gossett has drawn from the world of graphic arts and sign painting more than anything else. A galaxy of pop art, surf & skate iconography, rods & customs, chopper culture, monster movies, and surrealism swirls throughout his work. As well as painting he is a screen print artist and poster maker. “

    Hello,

Impressed is what it was when I saw this hot rod artwork.

But, in looking at other art he has completed, my favorite is the above one with a cool looking T-Bucket.
