Hoenstly? Probably the same bag made by the same people. Repurposed efficiencies... But while that thing held sweaty gym socks, mine held some battle tested Indy car helmet!
That thing looks sweet. Would love to see some before shots and to hear a little more on the restoration process.
I didn't take any before shots... I honestly didn't imagine it would turn out usable as the opposite side of the bag had some sort of black paint all over it. I used thinner to get it off, but that of course took the dye off as well. I used Rub and Restore dye (mixed their red and white to get the tone damn near perfect) and just put on coat after coat until it looked right. Afterwards, I wet sanded it a bit to get the patina to match. The final step was to replace the particle board bottom that retains the nickel plated feet. It had gotten wet and was crumbling... I used 1/8" particle board similar to the original, but coated it with epoxy to make it a bit more durable. No idea what to do with it, but it tells a story... no idea what that story is either, but don't care much... I just like it.
It's amazing what the right lighting and focus can do for an object. Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous.
Why hold back on family name if this auction was the end of their history? Who owned what race tracks did it visit. Great history
A guy named McCallister owned this bag… and in it, he kept his off brand 1/2 shell helmet (size small), a set of goggles, and some gloves. This wasn’t some famous race car driver I’m afraid… But his family raced for decades out of west Texas.
Reminds me of 60,s/70,s airline promo travel bags, they use too be relatively easy to find in second hand shops,i have some i got when i was younger having pride working for the national airline here. the government sold the airline a long time ago the cooperate ceo pigs took over and it didnt feel the same using them as lunch bags.I also love those really thin promo pit ackets from that era,usually bright coloured orange or green with a couple of gt vertical stripes lol
West Texas Wabi-sabi! I love it - so satisfying. @Ryan you are perhaps the one person in the world that would have restored this thing and it found its way into your hands. It has a story now.
Super cool! I love little gems like this. As for a use... Overnight bag. Bowling ball bag. First aid kit. Possibilities are endless. Up here in Canada, I keep a blanket in each vehicle. They come in handy winter and summer more often than expected. If it was mine, I'd toss a blanket in it and let it sit in the back seat or the trunk.
