Technical 32 rails…..original or repro’s

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by deucepickup32, Oct 30, 2023.

  1. The metallurgy question I asked was just because of comments suggesting the original was better. I thought maybe someone did a test.
I’ve got a vintage pair of made in the USA Chuck Taylor shoes. There is a difference with the new overseas ones.
A repop 32 grill shell doesn’t have all the details an original does.
But both look good cruising down the road.

I don’t have any worthwhile opinion but I will say this; the original style solid bucked river construction is second to none. I’ve done a LOT of riveting in my aviation days but that was mostly aluminum rivets. I would love the opportunity to buck those big steel rivets used to assemble a chassis.

  3. Early Ford frames were made to flex as part of the suspension. if you box them then the suspension has to do it all, I'd go unboxed like the original.

building real 32 Todor right now, only found the vin stamped in two spots on the left rail 1 near the firewall leg and 1 near the rear axle bend, lucky the vin and title both match

I know for a fact a lot of people have junked original frames partly out of the convenience of having a "bolt together" situation which brings up the "kit car" reference...it has been proven (on here) that a talented metalworker can build a '32 roadster out of sheetmetal or out of a Volkswagon after that the matter becomes purely subjective...I hate seeing old things discarded so to that end I bought a set of totally fubar originals (no one else on here would touch these w 10 ft. pole) because it's my bag ....or maybe I'm just a masochist:D I definitely don't think they will add any cache or value to the car...if anything probably detract;)

Frame number was the original engine and transmission number. I believe the frame was stamped after the tested engine was installed. Model B carried on the Model A number starting at 5,000,000. V-8 started in March 1932 at 18- ETC.

my understanding was ford did not vin stamp the engines as they knew those would wear out and be replaced, they did stamp the trans to the frame numbers.

It’s funny…an old Ford hot rod with 99% old original parts can be problematic if the frame is replaced, but if it has an original frame with the vin…99% of the parts can be replaced and no problemo, with the DOT!

  17. Why coupe has a TCI frame under it. I was in such a hurry to get the car together I didn’t finish out the grinder marks it came with. So if you see it it’s a repop frame. Got a quarter call someone who cares.

  18. If you plan on cutting it up why use the original rails, go repro. HRP
