  1. Drill out the bolt holes and use a bronze bushing that would simulate a shoulder bolt

Well now, on a '39 Dlx and '40 hood (I have both) the hinge arms bolt to the inner hood support. The 1/4" fine thread hole in the support should have a shoulder around it that fits in the arm. The NF thread bolts are short, just over 1/2". This shoulder is what the hinge piviots on, not the bolt. The problem is a lot of the shoulder portion is missing on these old hoods and therefore there is nothing for the hinge to piviot on. The bolts are supposed to have a spring washer that takes up slack and the bolt is drilled for safety wire because you DO NOT tighten the bolt all the way up, if you do the hinge will not pivot. I'm talking about how the originals were designed to work not how the repro stuff is designed. I just mounted the hood on my '40 PU using original items and it all works as intended. I'm not sure what the bolts mentioned above are intended to do, my original bolts have no shoulder, they are just a fine thread bolt with a drilled head for the wire.

I can’t seem to insert quotes from my cell phone at the moment.
@Pist-n-Broke , that is what I was referring to. Welding that stud to the bracket so when I shut the bracket to the cowl I don’t tighten the hinge points.
There was likely a better solution from Henry but I don’t think the aftermarket pieces are made the same way.

Yes, I concur. The bolts that go to the hood are shouldered and drilled for wire. I am referring to the hinge mounting to the cowl. The hinges must be secured or they will move about when the hood is opened and closed. But when I snug those nuts down on the inside of the cowl, it tightens the hinge at the pivot point.

To be clear BB is dealing with where the hinge attaches to the cowl, if I'm not mistaken.
I've drawn the blue lines to indicate the attaching/pivot points.
I'd remove from truck, place on work bench and simulate its action tightened down on some s**** sheet metal with holes drilled into it, then determine why it doesn't move when tightened.
It would seem there must not be a smooth (shouldered area) present that would be present in order for it to pivot.

Yes, those! It was so tight that last nite I got it open and then I couldn’t close it! Ugh.

I completely wore my battery down HAMBen earlier. I was stuck in the ER waiting room (which looked an awful lot like a Walmart) for 6 hours today.

The nice staff felt bad for me so they gave me a room for the night so I could charge my phone and have an egg sale Sammy and some morphine.

It didn’t cost an arm or a leg, just my appendix.
Surgery first thing in the morning and then back to the garage!

About the shoulder dilemma...I would use the shoulder bolts if you can get them, threads as shoulders are like files to metal or vise versa...somethings gonna wear and gets sloppy quicker without that smooth to smooth shoulder connection...probably been said but thats my take on reading about the situation earlier...

...and yes hopefully the rivets in those hinges aren't to tight...some luba luba and working them in a vise being careful not to shear ones finger off might help loosen thing up a tad as well...

Bronze is soft though and would wear against the harder steel...

When you shoulder it you could use thick and thin washers to take up slack but if you had a fit slightly looser than those pivot points on the hinge you're saying those pivots lock up...maybe they need oil at those points, are there springs involved?

Like a Toledo scale, no springs involved. This isn’t the only time I have bought shiny parts and had to fix them right out of the box.

When they admitted me they asked if I used tobacco, drugs or alcohol regularly. I said no because I don’t smoke or take drugs so it was honest.

she said after I answered that they don’t want addicted persons losing it in the hospital so they can actually have a beer or wine with their meal. I tried to change my answer but she wouldn’t let me.

as a car addict maybe they could hit me with a little nitrous oxide.

Whenever anyone says appendix, I always picture Tony Curtis in the Houdini film. Or the last few pages of a book.

  26. Good point but... this is a pivoting application that is relatively seldom used (how many times a year do you open your hood?) so I would sure take a shot at it. YMMV

Correct! This hood cannot move once painted and installed. I will take any and all precautions you gents are offering under advi*****t to prevent that.

I think it will come down to yet another issue with reproduced items. Those SS hinges and spring supports weren’t cheap. But, and please don’t quote me, it’s better to be operational than pretty.

Damn my lust for chrome and polished metals.

I’m surprised that you’re farming out the procedure. :D You’re a DIY guy!
But it is a way to meet cute nurses.
Hope your recovery is swift and you’re outta there.

I spent my (last) honeymoon in the hospital after surgery to repair a broken kneecap.
The nurse staff thought that was funny and taped a sign on the door that said
    “Honeymoon Suite. Knock Before Entering!

And Jessica is adorable, and a lot of fun. You can tell when someone likes what they do for a living. This morning she asked me if was having issues, I told her about the hood hinges. She said that I had enough pain meds.
